Top Bagpiper related questions
This can vary from Tasker to Tasker, but most bagpipers can perform for as long or as short as you want, within reasonable limits. Some bagpipers’ lungs are strong enough to enable them to play for 45 minutes straight, although they will need a long break afterwards. You may want them to play only at the beginning and end of your wedding, but not throughout the ceremony - bagpipes can be very loud.
Yes, you can! While there are popular songs your Tasker would have played many times over in most events they’ve played, you can still request your favourites. Do note that your Tasker can advise you if they can play your song - the bagpipe is not a very versatile instrument and may not have the capacity to replicate your song, incredibly complicated modern ones.
You don’t have to provide anything to your bagpiper apart from a comfortable place to sit while they wait to perform. It’s advisable to provide your Tasker with a meal, snacks and water if their performance takes up an entire day. Be sure to allow your bagpiper at least a 5-minute break to drink water in-between songs, as playing the bagpipes takes a lot of exertion and a lot of air!
Bagpipes are better suited outdoors or in spacious venues like churches or stages with high ceilings. If your Tasker must perform outdoors, then the weather can affect their performance. In inclement weather, your Tasker must tune the bagpipe to account for the wind, but constantly strong wind can make this difficult - even for the most skilled bagpipers. A good rule regarding weather is that if you wouldn’t want to stand outside, your bagpiper shouldn’t either.
Your bagpiper can play at the beginning, end of the ceremony and at the reception, if you like. They can play the Wedding March and end with any recessional wedding song that can be played on bagpipes. Some may contract a bagpiper to play throughout, but this can be too loud - not to mention hard for the priest to conduct the ceremony and difficult for a bagpiper to maintain.
As with most events, you should never book at the last minute and do it at least 2 to 3 months in advance. It might be impossible to find a bagpiper by the time wedding season arrives. Bagpipers aren’t as expected, and they can all be booked by many Scottish couples or those who want a Scottish touch to their big day.
Entertainment Services
What do bagpiper services include?
Bagpiper services include all the activities necessary for a hired bagpiper to add a touch of Scottish highland heritage to your event. Your hired bagpiper can perform at your wedding, birthday party, charity fundraiser or any other special occasion you want garnished with a bagpipe’s unique tunes.
Discussing and preparing their set
Your Tasker can meet with you online or in person to discuss their role and which songs to play. You can share the schedule and program of the event while they share a selection of songs they can play that is appropriate for the occasion. You may choose from their selection, but don’t hesitate to ask if they can play your favourite songs!
But take note, the bagpipe is an unusual musical instrument that’s limited to only nine notes. You can check with your Tasker if they can play the song you want, and they can say if they can play it on their bagpipe.
Demonstrating songs and traditional dress
If you are unsure of what songs will sound appropriate for your event, some Taskers can play some parts of the songs for you. This can be done via a video conferencing call, or you may be invited to see a live performance - if they perform at a Burns Supper or concert.
Your Tasker can also show you their intended dress for your event. They can wear and show you the full regalia - the Highland outdoor dress consisting of the traditional kilt, tartan, tartan flashes, belt, knee-high socks, ghillie brogues, a Sgian-dubh ornamental blade, sporran pouch, vest and jacket.
Upon request, some Taskers can wear a tartan and kilt that match with yours, though you may want to provide these accessories. Speaking of outfits, be sure to hire someone to make the appropriate outfit for your event!
Attending rehearsals
To make sure your event goes smoothly and your Tasker knows when to perform, they can attend rehearsals. Your Tasker can perform the songs you agreed upon and fine-tune their instrument during practice, if necessary. You may want to hire someone to guide them through the program and assist them on the event day.
Performing at your event
As agreed, your Tasker can arrive at your event venue on schedule and in full attire. They can tune the bagpipe on-site before their performance. They can do the contracted songs at the appropriate times, but they may take short breaks between songs to catch their breath. If your guests make requests, some Taskers may accommodate these and perform them.
