Top Cork Flooring related questions

No, there’s no need for you to provide any tools or equipment. The cork floorers you hire already have their tools and equipment to render the service. The only items you can supply are the cork flooring tiles or planks you want to install. If you don’t have the cork flooring materials yet, some specialists may offer to buy them for you for a small additional fee.

Apart from the minimum three days needed for the cork flooring materials to acclimate, this service can take an additional day or two to install and finish the cork flooring. Expect the service to take more time if the room is large or has an irregular shape, and the tiles or planks must be cut to custom shapes or sizes. Also, the more rooms you wish to install cork flooring, more time is likewise needed.

Yes! If you have more cork flooring jobs than you can handle or are shorthanded for any reason, you can hire a Tasker to fill in. Be sure to include essential details about your job and the type of skills and level of experience you’d like. Suitable Taskers should reply with a free quote; then you can negotiate from there.

Sweep them with a soft-bristled broom. You may use dishwashing soap or a mild chemical cleaner diluted in a bucket of warm water for stubborn dirt. Apply this cleaning solution with a sponge mop. Make sure the mop is damp and not soaked; too much water can make the cork expand and bust through the joints. Dry the cork with a soft microfibre cloth, then air-dry. Should you need extra help for the mess left behind by construction, book after-builders cleaning to tidy up your house.

Cork is cost-efficient, biodegradable and provides good insulation. Apart from its easy maintenance, it’s a soft, cushiony surface that’s also hypoallergenic and has antimicrobial properties. As for its downsides, it doesn’t have much resistance against damage. Pets can scratch and damage it, as can heavy furniture and appliances. Cork flooring needs a water sealant and can fade in colour if exposed to sunlight, so it’s not an ideal flooring for outdoor spaces.

In most cases, yes. While most manufacturers apply a sealant to their cork tiles or planks before the product leaves the factory, this protective layer doesn’t last long. Always use another layer or two of polyurethane or similar sealant after installation. This step ensures that no moisture penetrates the cork, and damages the floor or gives rise to mould. After the first application of sealant apply a new layer every 2 to 3 years.

What do cork flooring services include?

Cork flooring services include all the necessary tasks to install a cork floor in your bathroom, kitchen, bedroom, basement or other appropriate areas. This service can consist of planning the layout, preparing the site for installation, installing the cork flooring then applying the final finishes.

Your Tasker can install most common cork flooring types, whether it’s recycled cork flooring, glue-down cork tiles or click-together cork planks.

Acclimating the cork flooring

As cork flooring is a temperature-sensitive material, it’s essential to let it acclimate to the build site’s temperature and humidity. If you haven’t purchased the cork flooring and allowed it to acclimate, your hired specialists can buy the flooring for you for a small fee. The cork flooring material is then placed in its installation area to adjust for at least 72 hours.

Planning the layout

While the cork flooring acclimates, your hired tradesperson can plan the layout for cork flooring placement. (For more intensive planning, you may consider getting advice from a construction expert.)

Your Tasker can recommend the best layout that makes the most of each cork flooring plank or tile, and minimise waste. Once you’ve agreed on the structure, they can proceed to mark the floor for tile or plank placement.

Prepping the area

Your hired tradesperson may install a plywood underlayment if necessary. This can provide a level platform for the cork flooring, and ensure that the new cork flooring is at the same height as all the floors in your home. They can do all other preparations required by the cork flooring manufacturer; this can include applying the appropriate adhesive to each cork tile’s backs while using glue on the underlayment.

Installing the cork flooring

After the cork flooring has acclimated, the underlayment is finished, and other preparatory steps are done, your specialist proceeds with the installation. Your hired cork floorers install following the manufacturer’s instructions, established safety standards and building codes.

Sanding and finishing the cork floor

After completing the installation, your tradesperson finishes the cork flooring by sanding down any high spots or ridges with the appropriate equipment. They may use a drywall sander to do this, then clean up the resulting grit with a vacuum.

Your hired specialist can then apply a water-based sealant to give the flooring a protective layer. Some Taskers can use a special polish on the cork floor afterwards.
