Top Handyman related questions

The cost of hiring a handyman starts at $40 per hour and can reach up to $90, depending on the complexity of the task, the time and tools required, and your location. Handymen can also charge by project. Request a detailed quote from your Tasker for a more precise estimate.

Posting a job on Airtasker is the best way to find an expert in home maintenance service near you. The transparent review system on the platform can help you select the most qualified Tasker to complete your task to a high standard.

It varies depending on your handyman's skill set. They may either specialise in particular areas or offer general home maintenance services. To make sure you get the right expert, be as specific and detailed when posting your task.

A handyman typically handles smaller, day-to-day repairs and maintenance tasks around the home. On the other hand, a contractor manages larger-scale projects that require specific licences and expertise, taking on tasks like project management and coordination.

Handyman services can cover minor electrical tasks such as replacing light fixtures, installing ceiling fans, replacing outlets and switches, and installing new electrical appliances. However, they may not be licenced to work on more complex tasks such as wiring upgrades or major repairs. For any electrical work that poses potential safety hazards, consult a qualified electrician.

What do handyman services include?

Handymen can tackle a wide range of indoor and outdoor home DIY tasks. Here are some tasks you might ask a local handyman near you to pop round and help with:

General handyman services

Got a list as long as your arm of odd jobs that need a handyman to complete? Hire general labour handymen to get several things done at once. They can help with pulling up carpet, hanging doors, fixing broken appliances, garden work, and more.

Indoor installations and repairs

A local handyman can help install newly bought homewares or fix broken possessions (so you can hopefully save some money). For example, they can help with DIY blind installation and repairs, fitting and repairing the kitchen sink, fitting pet doors, hanging shower screens, and even wallpapering. They’ll get it done using their own specialist tools and will let you know if you need to provide or pay for any additional materials.

Outdoor installations and repairs

Your outdoor area and belongings have to deal with a lot. So help them withstand whatever nature (or your family) throws at them for longer by getting them professionally installed or repaired. Find a handyman who can help with garden shed installation, BBQ repair, fitting outdoor blinds, window repairs, fixing your mower, putting up your clothesline, and even repairing your kids’ trampoline.

Bricklaying and building work

You can hire a handyman near you with bricklaying and building experience to help build garden walls, repair loose brickwork, install MDF, or even construct a chicken coop. When getting quotes from tradesmen, mention if you’ve got the building materials already, or if you’d like them to supply the materials as part of the job.

Wall hanging

From pictures and TVs to bike racks and mirrors - if you need help with wall mounting, get a DIY handyman to fit your furnishings securely and make sure they’re level. Most handymen will bring their own tools, but you may need to supply extra materials such as screws, picture wire, or mounts for heavier electrical items like TVs and driers.

Furniture repair

When booking a handyman for furniture repair, you’ll need to be specific about the furniture that needs fixing. For example, handymen with carpentry experience may better if it’s your wooden coffee table, wardrobe, or sofa bed that need repairing. Meanwhile, a handyman with electrical experience may be right for any ceiling fan or digital fitness equipment fixes. That’ll ensure you get the best handyman near you for the job, plus the right tools to get it done.

Repairing or Replace Broken Timber Stair Tread

€150

Mountanville, Dublin

9th Nov 2024

The actual cracked stair tread Video is here: https://youtu.be/eAcVQsfgVEk Scope of Work Repairing (or replace) Broken Timber Stair Tread: Assess Damage: The tread is split approx two or three inches from the front edge. The split runs along the middle of the tread. (depending on handyman your advice) Remove the Damaged Tread maybe by unscrewing or prying it from the stringers. Ensure not to damage surrounding components like risers and stringers. If Replacement: Measure the dims of the old tread to obtain an accurate size for a new tread. Acquire Materials: A new tread board, preferably made of the same material as original. Wood glue (if the current tread can be mended and reinforced rather than replaced). Wood or steel screws dowels and/or nails or other woodworking things. Sandpaper (medium to fine grit) to smooth out any rough edges or prepare the replacement tread for finish. Matching stain/finish (if necessary). Tools Needed: Drill and driver for screws. Circular saw or handsaw to cut a new tread (if needed). Clamps (for mending existing tread with glue and screws, if this is viable). Hammer. Level to ensure tread placement is even. Repair or Replace: For Repair: (this is your work choice I only suggest) Apply wood glue to the split, clamp the tread to hold it in place, and let it set per glue’s instructions. Reinforce by driving screws diagonally thru the tread into the split, securing the fix. For Replacement: Cut a new tread to size. Position and screw the replacement tread securely onto the stringers. Sand and apply finish to match the surrounding steps. Final Touches: Ensure all screws/nails etc are flush to prevent tripping hazards or issues. Verify that the stair tread is strong secure and even, fit for purpose. Clean up and inspect the overall stability of the repaired or replaced stair. Test fit for purpose with another, perhaps me.
