Start by gathering the pictures or frames that you want to display. Gather your tools: you’ll need a hammer, drill, pencil, measuring tape, and small nails or anchors. Then, measure 57 inches or 1.45 m from the ground - this is the measurement used in most art installation hanging. Centre your pictures based on this line, then start drilling holes for the anchors or hammering in nails. Once these are secure, you can put up your images.
There are creative ways to do this. You can use adhesive hooks, heavy-duty tape, or magnetic paint. You can also use thumbtacks or putty for lighter (usually un-framed) pieces. Wire displays or a clothesline with cute clothespins are two quirky ways to show off photos or artworks. Hanging heavy pictures or framed ones will usually require the use of screws or hooks, though. These prevent the images from getting damaged or from causing an accident in your home.
Professional art hangers recommend hanging pictures at 57 to 60 inches from the floor. Those on the petite side can stick to 57 inches, while taller viewers will appreciate a height of 60 inches. Ceiling height can affect this measurement, too: if your ceiling is higher than 8 feet, hang pictures higher than 60 inches from the ground.

Take note that your pictures should be centred along this line - don’t position the top or bottom of the frame here.

First, attach D-rings or straphangers to the back of each frame. Then, hook the large curve of the picture rail hook to the frame. Use one hook for light pieces, and two hooks for hanging medium or heavy pictures. Loop the picture rail wire over the smaller curve of the hook. Loop the wire around the hooks or each side of a single hook. Secure each wire before cutting off the excess, then adjust for straightness as needed.

There are two ways to do a picture hanging from plaster walls. For lighter pieces, you can use adhesive hooks. For medium-weight and heavy-weight pieces, you’ll need to use an anchor and a screw. First, drill a hole for the anchor. Then, hammer the anchor into the wall and fix the screw into it. Make sure the screw juts out about half an inch away from the wall. Clean the area around the hole, then put up the picture.
Airtasker helps you find picture hanging services in your area with just one post. Our platform connects you with picture hangers who handle all types of photo installation - from lightweight pieces to heavier works of art. If you have particularly challenging walls to work with, such as plaster or brick, they can help you find solutions for your decorating needs as well. Tap the “Post a task” button to find an available and budget-friendly picture hanger near you.

What does a picture hanging service include?

Picture hanging service providers can help with every step from helping you pick the best spot to perfectly hanging your art. Your technician will come with all the materials and tools needed - all you need to do is provide your canvas or framed picture.

Here are the usual steps involved:

Choosing a spot

Professional picture hanging is more than hanging a piece of art on your wall. Your picture hanger will also have an eye for detail and act as an interior designer to help you decide on the best possible placement for your art. This will include taking into consideration the light in the room, the furniture in the space, the height of the ceiling, and how many pieces of art you want to hang. If you’ve got a heavy picture, it may need to be positioned in front of the wooden studs in your walls to help hold the weight. All these factors go into choosing the best position for your art.

Measuring

Once they’ve helped you decide on a spot for your art, the picture mounter will measure the artwork and the desired position on the wall. They’ll mark up pencil lines on the wall and on the back of the artwork for accuracy. This will ensure that once the picture is hung, it will be exactly centre and perfectly straight.

Hanging your art

Your picture-hanging expert will also help you choose the best way to hang your art. If you’re renting, they may suggest a temporary solution, like command hooks (or even command strips). These will be applied directly to the wall and will need some time to set before you can hang your picture. But if you’re looking for a permanent solution, your picture hanger will suggest either hire, hooks, or nails (or a combination) to ensure your picture stays up for years to come. They’ll either drill hooks or hammer nails into your wall to do this. After hanging your picture and checking that it’s level, they may also add adhesive bumper pads to the back of your canvas or frame to stop it from sticking to the wall.
