What does a mechanic service usually include?
Mechanics are skilled in nearly all aspects of keeping your car maintained, serviced, and repaired, so it’s roadworthy and efficient to run. The exact process during your service will depend on how your mechanic prefers to work and the type of tasks they’re doing, like:
Minor service
This is the most basic engine service a mechanic provides, but it can make a huge difference in whether or not your car can operate efficiently. A minor service usually alternates with a major service, at around the 6-month mark. A mechanic near you can do minor services because your mechanic only needs a flat service to get the job done. They’ll unscrew the sump plug, allowing old oil to drain from your car. Then they’ll remove the old oil filter and replace with a new one that’s the right size for your vehicle. Your mechanic will dispose of your old filter and oil. They’ll also inspect other key components, like your battery, lights, air filters, and other fluids.
Log book servicing / major service
A major service or log book service involves a series of steps in line with your vehicle manufacturer’s service manual. It’ll include a combination of major and minor services, depending on the age of your car, or how many kilometres it’s travelled. Your service may include testing your lights, brakes, and battery. Then checking fluid levels, windscreen wipers, windows, mirrors, steering, suspension, radiator, fan belts, and tyre pressure. Finally, it may also include maintaining/replacing oil filters, hoses, belts, tyres, and wheel alignment. Your mechanic will finish off by stamping your logbook to record the services completed, which can help maintain your car’s resale value.
Roadworthy certificate or pink slip
A roadworthy certificate or pink slip is a specific vehicle check that’s conducted to ensure your car is in a roadworthy condition and can be operated safely. In some states, it’s required when selling a car or may be required each year to confirm your vehicle is safe for registration purposes. A mechanic will check off a list of predetermined items to verify that your car meets a minimum safety standard set out by your state government. They’ll focus on safety, checking things like tyres, brakes, steering, suspension, rust or damage, seatbelts, windows, lights, and your windscreen.
Major and minor repairs
Sometimes your car might need a little extra attention if you’ve had an accident, broken down, or your drive feels a bit different to normal. A car mechanic can perform minor and major repairs on most vehicles. They’ll use diagnostic equipment to locate the issue and decide on a course of action to get your car back on the road. If they don’t have the necessary spare parts, they may need to order them to finish off your repair and replace any faulty parts. Note that a mechanic service is usually limited to your car’s engine and electrics. It’s best to speak to a panel beater if you also have external body damage.

Remove stuck engine oil drain bolt - 2014 Holden Barina Hatch Auto 1.6
$50
Pyrmont NSW, Australia
2nd Jun 2024
Hi I need help removing the stuck engine oil drain bolt on my 2014 Holden Barina Hatchback Auto 1.6L. I’ve put oil flush mixture in the engine oil already so I can’t drive the car anywhere based on the mixture instructions. I bought the right Torx screw kit to fit and a decent wrench but my mechanic on the last oil change seems to have tightened it too hard and I don’t want to go further with it to destroy the bolt, if it hasn’t already done so (which I’m happy to replace if needed after its removal). The bolt has still some teeth but may need channel lock pliers or more if you know the trick for this. I have car stands (2 tonne), but no mechanic tools above the Stanley wrench set I have and the wrench I got from Bunnings recently with the torx screw set. The car is parked in my brother’s apartment car park (in Pyrmont), flat cement surface, with space to raise and work at it. Let me know if you need anymore details. Thanks mate
Phillip was brilliant, best mechanic help I’ve had by far. Big recommend! 10 stars :)
