Top Car Service related questions

For car services tasks, you may need to enquire as to what specialist licenses may be required to undertake your task as this can vary. Please make sure that you confirm that a Tasker has the relevant licence and insurance before accepting an offer.

As a rule of thumb, most cars need a minor service every 6 months (10,000km) and a major service every 12 months (20,000km), but it depends on the manufacturer’s recommendations. Your service schedule will generally alternate between a minor and major service.

When you hire a mobile car service near you, it’s often more affordable than heading into a local dealership or garage. And it’s a whole lot more convenient because an experienced mechanic comes to you.

A standard car service doesn’t include any additional repair or maintenance work. If your car needs any extra services, these will be billed separately and may need an additional booking.

A minor car service includes a basic check of the key components in a car, whereas a major service includes a comprehensive vehicle check on all the components in a car. Both services are crucial in prolonging your car’s lifespan and ensuring your car runs smoothly.

A minor service can take 1-2 hours to complete, whereas a major service can take up to 3 hours. If you need any parts replaced or repaired, it may take longer.

Generally, the cost of a car service ranges from $140 to $550. The cost will depend on whether you need a major or minor service, the make and model of your car, your location, and any additional parts/repairs needed. For instance, getting your Mazda car serviced can cost around $150 to $900.

You can get your car serviced near you by booking a local mobile mechanic on Airtasker. Airtasker connects you with trusted and affordable mechanics across Australia who can come to your location to perform logbook services, oil changes, brake checks, and more.

Simply post a task, review the profiles of Taskers, compare offers, and choose a mechanic based on their ratings.

A logbook service follows the manufacturer’s recommended schedule to maintain your vehicle’s warranty and performance. It includes checking and replacing oils, filters, fluids, and other types of maintenance at specific intervals based on your car’s make, model, and mileage. According to the NSW government, all vehicles should have a logbook or owner's handbook that details when the vehicle should be serviced and what type of maintenance is needed.

On Airtasker, you can book qualified mobile mechanics who offer logbook servicing that meets manufacturer standards. They’ll stamp your logbook to keep your service history up to date, often at a lower cost than dealerships.

On Airtasker, you can book a wide range of car repairs, including both minor fixes and major mechanical work. These include:

  • Brake repairs (pads, rotors, fluid)

  • Car battery replacement

  • Engine diagnostics and repairs

  • Alternator and starter motor repairs

  • Radiator and cooling system fixes

  • Suspension and steering repairs

  • Exhaust and muffler repairs

  • Timing belt or chain replacement

  • Auto electrical repairs

  • Transmission service and repairs

  • Wheel and tyre repairs

Fleet vehicle servicing involves the regular maintenance and repair of multiple vehicles used by a business to ensure they stay roadworthy, efficient, and compliant with safety standards. The service includes oil changes, brake inspections, tyre rotations, logbook servicing, and mechanical repairs. These are often scheduled to minimise downtime and keep your fleet running smoothly.

If you're operating a commercial fleet, be sure to get regular fleet vehicle servicing. On Airtasker, you can book trusted mobile mechanics to service your fleet vehicles at a time and place that suits you. Whether you operate a small delivery fleet or a large company carpool, you can find Taskers for easier and more convenient vehicle maintenance with flexible, on-site servicing.

What does a car service include?

As a general rule, your car will likely need to be serviced every 6-12 months, depending on the manufacturer’s recommendations. The exact inclusions of your car service and mobile car service will vary depending on how much work is needed on your car. Through Airtasker, you can book some of the popular car services near you, including:

Oil and oil filter change

An oil and oil filter change will help your car run smoothly and increase fuel efficiency. It’s one of the most important parts of a service and should be included in both minor and major services. Your mechanic will find the oil drain plug, loosen and unscrew it, and carefully allow the old oil to drain into a pan. Then they’ll replace and tighten the plug before removing and replacing the filter. Finally, they’ll fill up with fresh oil up to the “full” mark on the dipstick.

Minor car service

A minor service is also known as an interim or basic service. It focuses on changing and topping up fluids and inspecting several components for wear and tear. A minor service includes an oil and filter change; an under-body and under-bonnet inspection; a top-up of all key fluids in the engine, including washer fluid, brake fluid, antifreeze, and steering fluid; and a check of up to 35 key components, such as lights, tyres, and brakes. Most mechanics will also check the manufacturer guidelines and recommend any additional work your car may need.

Major car service

A major service includes all the basic services described above, but will also include an inspection of an additional 15-30 car components to ensure that your vehicle is in the best condition possible. These components can include wheel bearings, shock absorbers, and the air conditioning system. Any parts that need extra work or replacement, such as car batteries or windscreens, will be billed as extra. If you don't have time to bring your vehicle to a mechanic, hire a mobile mechanic to come to your location instead for a major car service.

Model-specific services

If you’re enthusiastic about cars, it might be a good idea to book a mechanic who specialises in your car’s make and model. You can book a car service with a mechanic who specialises in BMW Servicing, Ford Servicing, Holden Servicing, Honda Servicing, Hyundai Servicing, Mazda Servicing, Mercedes Benz Servicing, Nissan Servicing, Peugeot Servicing, Subaru Servicing, Toyota Servicing, and Volkswagen Servicing. They’ll be familiar with the common issues that are likely to come up and will have specific parts available on-hand in case you need a replacement or repair.
