Why book a local carpenter through Airtasker?

Carpentry plays a massive part in our lives. From the chairs we sit on to the homes we live in, so much of what we interact with has gone through the hands of a carpenter at one point.

Carpenters can help with projects of all sizes. If you’re building an extension or adding a carport to your home, an experienced carpenter can create a frame that’s built to last and meets all council regulations.

On the other hand, if you’re looking at the finer details of your home, a carpenter can be of great assistance too. From small detailing like replacing skirting boards and repairing wall partitions to refurbishing your dining table and chairs, hiring a skilled labourer can make all the difference.

The average price of carpentry services on Airtasker ranges from $20 to $45 per hour. The rate can change depending on the complexity of the job and the carpenter's level of experience. Compare rates and set a budget before booking a carpenter in your area.

Carpenters or chippies work with wood in all manner of ways. From timber framing for a house or carport to the finishing touches on furniture, carpenters are hired for jobs large and small.

Not all carpenters offer the same services. An experienced cabinet maker may not be the best choice if you want timber framing done, while a decking expert may not have the credentials to refurbish your furniture. It's recommended to choose a tasker whose work experience matches the specific job you'll be requesting.

Yes. While some carpenters have specific areas of expertise, you can employ someone to do a number of small woodworking jobs in one visit. This can be the same job in a number of rooms or different jobs throughout the house. Remember though that some carpentry jobs require more than one day to complete.

Depending on their specialty and level of training, you may find that a carpenter comes under a different name. From specific tasks such as cabinet maker to more general terms like construction worker, artisan, joiner, or woodworker, there are plenty of variations for carpentry workers.

In New Zealand, carpenters can obtain skills by learning on the job under the guidance of a master carpenter. They can also complete carpentry apprenticeship training and obtain a Level 4 New Zealand certificate in carpentry.

For certain types of carpentry tasks, you may need to enquire as to what specialist licences may be required to undertake your task as this can vary. Please make sure that you confirm that a Tasker has the relevant licence and insurance before accepting an offer.

A carpenter primarily focuses on working with wood to construct or repair structures such as furniture, framing, doors, and cabinets. They typically specialize in tasks that require woodworking skills, like installing trim or building custom pieces. A builder, on the other hand, oversees and manages the overall construction of buildings or structures, coordinating different trades (including carpentry, plumbing, and electrical) to ensure a project is completed on time and within budget.

Carpenters need to be careful of several safety risks, such as sharp tools, heavy machinery, and working with materials that can splinter or cause injury. They should also be mindful of their posture and body mechanics to avoid repetitive strain or injury, especially when lifting or carrying heavy materials. Additionally, carpenters should follow proper safety protocols when working in environments with dust, fumes, or potential hazards like electrical wiring to minimize health risks and ensure safe work conditions.

Top Joiner related questions

Joinery sets itself apart from carpentry in the way it’s done and in the scale it’s in. While both work on wood installations, carpentry is usually done on-site on a smaller scale and usually on fixtures already. In comparison, joinery is done at a larger scale in a dedicated workshop, typically building bigger home installations like stairs, doors, and door and window frames.

No, especially since joinery is the type of work that is usually done in a workshop rather than on-site. Planers, circular saws, and other machinery are involved in crafting some of these larger-scale installations for your home. Suppose that some joinery can indeed be done on-site. Taskers are experts who are expected to come to work prepared not just with the skills but also the tools needed to get the job done.

This would depend on how much joinery is needed to be made, be it for repairs and minor renovations or a construction project built from the ground up. Regardless, expect a bit of time for local joiners near you to finish your joinery in their workshops and deliver them to your home or site. It is best to discuss timelines with your Taskers to manage expectations.

Typically, yes. However, how long a Tasker will guarantee the work would vary from case to case. For all we know, a Tasker may be confident about the work and give an extended warranty. Regardless, Taskers will work on the projects to the best of their ability to ensure that the finished product would last long. For specific warranty questions, it would be best to discuss this with your Tasker.

Yes, you can, but it comes with certain risks. For one, you would likely be unable to come up with something of similar or better quality than someone who is more qualified and has years of experience to deal with these kinds of jobs. This is where Airtasker comes in by connecting you to different Taskers who can do it for you with high quality and less effort, at a reasonable cost.

There is no correct answer for this as this would depend on the complexity of the work and the amount of joinery that needs to be made, among other things. You can gauge your estimated costs on the Taskers’ initial quotations when you put up a task. However, these costs may be subject to negotiation and change depending on how the project goes.

What do carpenters do?

Whether you’re planning a major renovation on your home or you simply want to make things look a bit nicer, hiring a carpenter or chippy can help you with many different tasks. Carpenters can visit a construction site or take on any work in homes that require additional labour for different projects or repairs.

Carpentry work is generally broken down into two types: rough and finish. Rough carpentry refers to work that doesn’t have an intricate look, as it’s covered up – often by bricks, tiles, or plaster work. Finish carpentry covers the work that will be on display, so needs to have a nicer finish. Furniture, decking, and window frames all fall into this second category.

Decking

Want to improve your outdoor space? Hire a carpentry in your area to build a deck. Carpenters who work as a decking specialist can add an outdoor deck or upgrade an existing one that opens up your outdoor space. This is great if you want to entertain guests or eat outside as a family during the sunny months.

Cabinet making

Cabinet makers are one example of finish carpentry, because of the high level of detail that goes into their end products. Unlike structural work, it’s important that a cabinet looks nice, so this type of carpenter is a lot more focused on fine details. Cabinet makers often specialise in other forms of furniture making too.

Refinishing carpentry

While structural carpentry is concerned with jobs on the large end of the scale, trim or refinishing carpentry looks at the small end. A trim carpenter is the way to go if you want someone to fix up your skirting boards, cornicing, or a similar aspect of your home.

Custom made furniture

A house isn’t a home without a few personal touches, and if you’d rather avoid the cookie-cutter Ikea approach to decorating your property, hiring a carpenter to create custom-made furniture can make you stand out. Whether you want chairs, tables, or a shoe rack, there’s someone nearby who can help.

We have a huge round wooden(not sure what type of wood) table in our office ball room that the diameter is about 2.5meter. Basically it needs to be refurbished to get rid of paint marks, wear and tear. The table is very large and heavy so I was thinking if the job can be done on site? Not super urgent job, would love to get the quotes first. Thank you. - Due date: Flexible

Build wooden platform for minivan

$300

Christchurch 8011, New Zealand

12th Feb 2023

We would like someone to build a wooden platform for a bed in the back of our 2005 Mazda MPV. We would like the platform to extend from behind the driver's seat to the back door of the van. We need the platform to be sturdy enough to hold about 160-170 kg of weight. The only other feature we would like to add to the wooden platform is a piece of wood that can slide in and out from under the bed to be used as a stable platform to cook on. I have attached a photo below of the general idea of what we are looking for. I have also attached a photo of the general idea of the sliding surface that comes out from under the bed. This is just a rough example of what we want. We would prefer cheaper materials and a simpler build of this sliding platform though. - Due date: Before Tuesday, 21 February 2023
