Top Bird Sitting related questions

You can find a bird sitter near you right here on Airtasker! It only takes minutes, plus you can find a pet sitter who fits your budget and needs. If your pet isn’t the only one that needs looking after, we can also help you find available house sitters who can keep things in order while you’re out on your trip or night out.

Airtasker can connect you to bird boarding for common types - exotic birds require more species-specific training. The advantage of a bird sitting service at a nearby facility is that your pet will be in a comfortable and familiar environment. Plus, the pet sitter will be dedicated to their needs, unlike the minders at a boarding facility who need to watch over multiple pets. To request a bird sitter near you, tap the “Post a task” button on this page.

First off, ask your Tasker about their experience in watching over birds, especially birds like yours. You can ask for references in addition to their customer reviews and ratings. Next, ask how they handle pet emergencies. If you have time, ask to schedule a meeting before the actual appointment, so that they can meet your birds and familiarise themselves with your instructions. Lastly, ask for their contact information and don’t forget to give them yours.

First, make caring for your bird easy—prep the supplies, including food and treats. Arrange things in such a way that your pet sitter will be able to feed and give water to your pet regardless of your bird’s temperament or attitude towards the pet sitter. Next, introduce your bird and sitter to each other. Gauge their level of comfort with each other to avoid any accidents that may scare your pet, injure your pet sitter, or cause damage in your home.

What does a bird sitting service include?

Bird sitting services usually cover feeding, cage cleaning, plus treats and playtime for your feathered friend. This involves a Tasker going to your house on a regular basis (e.g. daily or twice a day) to care for your bird. What makes it better than bringing your pet to a boarding facility is that your bird gets to stay in your own home. Plus, your Tasker will be dedicated to their care during their stay.

Though the details may vary depending on your pet’s own needs and the Tasker you hire, here’s what you can expect when you book a bird sitting service through Airtasker:

Feeding

The Tasker stops by your house and refills your bird’s supply of food and water. To make sure that what’s left in their dish isn’t just hulls, you should have the container emptied, cleaned, and refilled every time your bird sitter visits. Also, it’s best that you set up your pet’s cage in a way that makes it easy for your sitter to feed them without provoking your pet or getting injured. Some birds can be quite territorial, so it’s best you plan the logistics carefully.

Cage cleaning

Some Taskers may offer cage cleaning services as well. Your bird sitter swaps out the paper lining their cage and makes sure that your birds don’t put their waste in their food and water bowls. If you are away from home for a week or longer, your Tasker may also need to do a thorough cleaning of the cage bars and perches. Demonstrate how to safely transfer your bird to another location while the cage is being cleaned, and make sure your bird will follow your Tasker’s commands for leaving and going back inside the cage.

Treats and playtime

Your pet will also need their regular exercise and roaming time while you’re out. Brief your Tasker about how to get them out and back inside the cage, and let them know how long you’d like your bird to fly around the house. If your bird knows any tricks or games such as foraging for treats, your Tasker may like doing these with your pet. Just make sure that your Tasker can keep your pet safe while in flight - check for open or broken doors and windows, or any clutter that your bird may pick up and play with.
