General Maintenance

What do handyman services include?

Handymen with good customer service can tackle a wide range of indoor and outdoor home DIY tasks. Here are some tasks you might ask a local handyman near you to pop around and help with:

General handyman services

Got a list as long as your arm of odd jobs that need a handyman to complete? Hire general labour handymen to get several things done at once. They can help with general maintenance tasks such as pulling up a carpet, hanging doors, fixing broken appliances and replacing light bulbs, garden work, and more.

Indoor installations and repairs

A local handyman can help install newly bought homewares or fix broken possessions (so you can hopefully save some money). For example, they can help with DIY blind installation and repairs, fitting and repairing the kitchen sink, fitting pet doors, hanging shower screens, and even wallpapering. They’ll get it done using their own specialist tools and will let you know if you need to provide or pay for any additional materials.

Outdoor installations and repairs

Your outdoor area and belongings have to deal with a lot. So help them withstand whatever nature (or your family) throws at them for longer by getting them professionally installed or repaired. Find a handyman who can help with garden shed installation, BBQ repair, fitting outdoor blinds, window repairs, fixing your mower, putting up your clothesline, and even repairing your kids’ trampoline.  The cost of these services varies. You can learn how much letterbox replacement costs or how much window blinds installation costs with our price guides.

Bricklaying and building work

You can hire a handyman near you with bricklaying and building experience to help build garden walls, repair loose brickwork, install MDF, or even construct a chicken coop. When getting quotes from tradesmen, mention if you’ve got the building materials already, or if you’d like them to supply the materials as part of the job.

Wall hanging

From pictures and TVs to bike racks and mirrors - if you need help with wall mounting, get a DIY handyman to fit your furnishings securely and make sure they’re level. Most handymen will bring their own tools, but you may need to supply extra materials such as screws, picture wire, or mounts for heavier electrical items like TVs and driers.

Furniture repair

When booking a handyman for furniture repair, you’ll need to be specific about the furniture that needs fixing. For example, handymen with carpentry experience may better if it’s your wooden coffee table, wardrobe, or sofa bed that need repairing. Meanwhile, a handyman with electrical experience may be right for any ceiling fan or digital fitness equipment fixes. That’ll ensure you get the best handyman near you for the job, plus the right tools to get it done.

Plastering the house

$1,500

Coburg VIC, Australia

20th May 2024

There are two walls that have been partially removed, and a fireplace removed, and new door created through a wall, plastering over an old hearth (which will be removed from the outside). All need plastering - it’s a 100 year old house, old style plastering is there currently. The new plaster MUST blend in.

Remove old rangehood and install new one

$450

Brunswick VIC, Australia

20th May 2024

I need a new rangehood installed, including removal of the old rangehood. It will require the following steps: 1. Removal of old copper 90cm rangehood currently installed in the kitchen (which is currently vented straight into the ceiling cavity without proper ducting or external ventilation). This is being sold so should not be too damaged if it can be avoided. 2. Installation of new rangehood (I will provide this), including new ducting and external venting (you will provide this) either through terracotta tiled ceiling or appropriate other exit point, being sure to: - not cause too much damage to new internal ceiling insulation; - ensure external venting is sealed and watertight; - meet any safety standards that apply; 3. Clean up finish including any ceiling and wall plaster patch up, and leave everything in 'ready to use' condition, including removal of rubbish, except any painting which can be done by myself. Considerations: - house has double brick walls (including internal brick walls), so external venting may need to be done via terracotta roof unless another exit point can be found in the roof; - roof cavity access manhole is via the living room; - Current rangehood from ceiling to cooktop is approx. 1400mm, new rangehood is 1240mm, so a flue extension may be needed, but unlikely.
