What does a tradesman do?

Tradesmen (and tradeswomen!) can help you tackle the tasks that need the expertise, tools, and knowledge that only a qualified local tradie can give. Whether you need help with home repairs or construction, you can find tradespeople to help with tasks like:

Electrical & plumbing

When you hire a tradie to work with electricity, gas, or water, they’ll need special qualifications, training, and equipment to keep you and your house safe from fires, flooding, and property damage. You’d need to hire an electrician to install your new light fittings or electrical equipment, like ovens. And you’d need a plumbing tradie to help with plumbing tasks, like fitting new taps and pipes, or gas plumbing tasks like installing or repairing heaters and stoves. Your tradie will start by asking questions about the issues you’re having, then they’ll do a physical inspection of the area to assess the work needed. They’ll use their specialist tools and equipment to repair, install, or replace parts to get everything working properly.

Carpentry & cabinet making

Tradesmen are usually qualified professionals, so they’re ideally suited to tasks that need a higher skill level than a handyman. Carpenters and cabinet makers are in high demand for installing new cabinets, custom-making furniture and installing built-in robes and cupboards. They’ll measure your space to ensure the furniture and built-ins fit perfectly and match your existing decor. Then they’ll work with a range of equipment and tools (onsite or offsite) to cut and shape the wood, then assemble any parts to create your finished product.

Exteriors

Tradesmen can help provide a professional finish to your exterior building tasks. For example, installing or repairing balustrades. Your professional tradesmen will measure, fit and install glass, metal, or wood balustrades to make your balcony area or stairs safe while matching the design of your home. Once they’ve established a safe work zone, they’ll remove the old balustrades before installing the new parts. Another popular exterior task is installing or upgrading awnings. Your tradie can pull down old, broken, or faded awnings and help you choose a new awning to match your house and surroundings. Then they’ll carefully install the new awning so that it is safe and secure.

Concrete repairs & resurfacing

When concrete is damaged, it can create trip hazards, and let in water, dirt and other pests, which can cause further damage. Concrete resurfacing can help repair damage and give your property an instant update with coloured concrete overlays and/or designs. Your tradie will first assess the damage, then repair or replace any broken areas. Then they may clean the existing area with high-pressure hoses or chemicals. Once the area is clean and prepared, they’ll mix up a thin, concrete-based surface compound that will cover the area.

Render poorly patched holes in wall

$200

Ashfield NSW, Australia

27th Apr 2024

We hired a sealer to come patch holes from recent electric and plumbing work. We did this so that we could repaint and with a fresh wall as we are installing new kitchen. I am pretty sure the work the tiler/sealer did is very poor and not up to scratch. (See photos) Unfortunately we are only adding a new kitchen because we discovered hidden water damage after purchasing our first apartment. The cabinets get put in Monday so we would need help tomorrow. I am 3 weeks from delivering my first baby so it’s all quite stressful. Please let me know the amount of work it would require to smooth this out. We feel a bit cheated as he said the work would smooth out everything and we could paint it all white for a blank canvas for our kitchen install and it’s left a huge mess for us to clean and figure out.

I can’t express how grateful we are to Jose. We originally hired someone else who did significant damage. Jose came over and removed the terrible work before it dried and came the next morning to do redo all the walls with incredible attention to detail and a more than fair price, AND just before our kitchen was to be installed. He really did save the day. Hire him if you can, he is someone you can trust. Amazing person, amazing work. 💪🏼

Clean enclosed verandah - brick walls, concrete floor, windows, etc

$200

Russell Lea NSW, Australia

23rd Jan 2024

We have a small enclosed verandah that is about 3 m x 1.3 m. We are converting it to a study. It has been used as a store room and needs a deep clean. The floor is concrete and has some residual foam underlay that needs to be removed (as much as possible); brick walls need washing (inside only); large windows need washing (inside only); ceiling needs washing. There is a drainage hole from the verandah to the outside garden so lots of water is ok. Installing IKEA 5x Vidga curtain rails & roller blind to drywall

$250

Burwood NSW, Australia

15th Dec 2023

Have 5x 1400mm IKEA Vidga curtain rails that need installed on my ceiling in lounge room & bedroom. + 1 roller blind in kitchen 3 rails in lounge 2 rails in bedroom 1 roller blind in kitchen Terminal curtain rails will need to be cut shorter in order to fit the space. See pictures for approx measurements. I believe my walls/ceiling are drywall - so will need you to supply appropriate anchoring and correct screws. Living room also has existing roller blinds which are already fixed to ceiling which are to stay. - Due date: Flexible - Due date: Before Saturday, 23 December 2023

Really poor experience with Tim . I would NOT book him. 1. Did not anchor a curtain rail appropriately to ceiling, it was lopsided , has already come off and he claimed "that's its design" 2. After completion pressured me to "cancel the job and just transfer me" 3. Shows no regard for your home environment. Leaves his scraps everywhere and even put his tools, leaving stains on my bedsheets then tried to cover it up with my blanket
