I have an old Apple iMac 21.5” late 2012. 8Gb Ram and 1TB storage. I am trying to restore the computer (for sale) but I keep getting an error message ‘the target volume is part of incomplete system and can not be installed to’. When I try and erase the disk in Disk Utility, it comes up with the following error: ‘unmounting disk, couldn’t open device’ (-69877)

Help clear the System Data from my Mac

The system data (and associated bin) on my Mac desktop are so huge that I can’t upgrade my iOS or install a new program that I need (I have about 2gb spare) I’ve done everything the internet suggests - my caches are empty, bin empty, I have removed all large files. I’ve installed and used ‘clean my Mac’, I even went into the background and managed to delete some stuff but it’s just gone into a bin that I can’t empty. When I try, it says things can’t be deleted because programs are in use - I have shut all programs down but suspect the issue lies with Messages in someway because although I shut it down, it remains active and the files I tried to delete related to it. For someone in the know, I expect this is the work of moments. A box I haven’t ticked somewhere. So I just need someone to get me across that line before I throw the whole thing out… which I can’t afford to do obviously. If the job turns out to be bigger, I’m open to extending the task.
