What do Chinese tutoring services include?
Chinese tutoring services will usually cover tones, vocabulary, grammar, and useful phrases. Ideally, you’ll learn how to read and listen to Chinese and how to write and speak the language. Moreover, your lessons’ coverage will vary depending on your personal needs, including the time per session, how advanced you are, or if the student is a toddler or child.
In general, though, here’s what you can expect when you book Chinese language lessons through Airtasker:
Basic Chinese Lessons: Tones
Beginners need to learn about tones, especially since this is a language feature that isn’t present in European languages (including English). Depending on the Chinese dialect you wish to learn, you may have to master 4-9 tones.
Introductions and useful Chinese phrases
Your Tasker shows you how to introduce yourself in Chinese, as well as how to greet others. By extension, you may learn things like numbers, ages, occupations, titles, the members of the family, and more.
Next, your Tasker may show you how to say or write useful phrases. These may be as common as “Where is the bus station?”, “How much?”, and “Where is the ladies’ room?” or as specific as what you’ll need to learn when doing business with Chinese speakers or vacationing in Hong Kong. Keep in mind that you can have your tutor tailor this to your motivations for learning the language.
Chinese grammar and proficiency
Since you’ve already been introduced to a number of Chinese words and phrases, you’ll proceed to the rules of the language. This includes using the characters (which represent syllables) to form words, phrases, and sentences. You’ll learn how to phrase questions, negative statements, and more.
Once you’ve gotten a grasp of the basics, your Tasker may drill you by having you read and write in Chinese, listen to Chinese conversations, watch Chinese videos, and converse using the language. You may also be asked to translate materials from Chinese to English and vice versa. The goal is to build your fluency in the language and familiarise yourself with just about any Chinese phrase you may encounter.
Advanced Chinese lessons
Advanced Chinese lessons usually cover more words and phrases. You can expect more complex exercises and more frequent conversations with your tutor (or with others, as instructed by your tutor). Some may also consider advanced Chinese lessons if they have already learned Mandarin and now want to master Cantonese.
