Optus webmail help

My optus mail account keeps filling up, and tells me I need to delete mail. When I delete mail from the webmail, it also deletes it from my computer. And of course, I'd like to be able to keep some mail, if its important! The optus webmail system is a hopelessly slow and cumbersome site- so unless I sit there and painstakingly sift and delete all mail in the inbox, this keeps happening. Its an exercise in total frustration. So I'd like to find a way to make mail drop off the server when I get it on my computer. Or auto delete, or something, anything must be better than this! Optus help i no help, so can you help?
