Suggested reads about Concrete Delivery

What does a concrete delivery service include?

You can book concrete delivery for a variety of small-to-large projects around your home, yard, or worksite. Your delivery person will use a truck to collect the concrete from the nearest supplier before delivering it to your location. If needed, they’ll assist with the pouring process to ensure it’s laid in place as soon as possible to avoid premature setting. Concrete delivery services typically include:

Concrete pick up

Your contractor will pick up the concrete from either a concrete plant or a hardware store, depending on whether you need dry concrete or premixed concrete. For dry concrete, your delivery person will load the bags into their ute or van, using a trolley, taking care to avoid making any tears. For pre-mixed concrete, your contractor will use a concrete mixer truck to collect the concrete from a batching plant. They’ll ensure the plant is close to your drop-off point (within 90mins) so that the concrete doesn’t begin to set in the truck.

Dry concrete mix delivery

Dry concrete mix is usually ordered for smaller jobs like retaining walls and landscaping steps. This concrete comes dry and is mixed onsite. Most delivery drivers will complete the job with a single truckload, but an extra trip may be necessary if you need to lay concrete across a larger space. They’ll unload the concrete mix and deliver it to your preferred dropoff location. If you’ve also hired them to do your concreting, your contractor will mix the concrete in a freestanding mixer, pour it into the existing formwork, and smooth it out using a steel trowel and level.

Ready-mix concrete delivery

Ready-mixed concrete is used for bigger jobs like driveway concreting and garage slabs. It’s premixed at a local concrete batching plant before your concrete delivery driver picks it up in a concrete mixing truck. They’ll then drive to your location and deliver the concrete, ensuring any spillage can be easily cleaned up, so that there is no risk of it entering the stormwater system (this can cause slurry pollution in waterways, the hardening of stormwater pipes, and lead to fines). To trap any spillage, your contractor will put the necessary controls in place before pumping, such as placing plastic under the concrete pump and applying temporary bunds across all downslope gutters. If you’ve also hired your delivery driver to help with the concreting process, they’ll use their equipment to pump the concrete from the truck and into the designated area, before smoothing it out.

Clean up

Proper clean-up measures are vital for a concrete delivery task, so your contractor will take the time to follow the correct protocol when cleaning the equipment and surrounding areas. Before leaving the site, they’ll scrape down and clean their tyres to remove any concrete, collect and remove all spillage, and sweep up residue. If you’ve hired them for concreting, too, they’ll wash down the shoots and barrels in a space where the water will not enter the stormwater system. If this isn’t possible, they’ll take them to a washdown depot. Your delivery person will take all their equipment with them when they leave and ensure the area is left clean and tidy. If they used a concrete mixer truck, they’ll drive this to a suitable waste management facility to empty out any remaining unused concrete, ready for recycling. Then they’ll wash out the inside of the barrel before the residual concrete mixture hardens.
