What do epoxy floor coating services include?

When you request an epoxy or resin floor coating via Airtasker, you get a floorer to do the actual coating using the necessary tools and materials for the job. The number of Taskers required may vary depending on whether you're doing resin flooring for a residential or commercial property. Some floorers may also assume that you've already moved any objects out of your room, garage, or driveway. Consider requesting assistance from your floor coating specialist or a removal service near you.

While the specifics may vary depending on your Tasker, here's what you can more or less expect from your epoxy floor coating service:

Epoxy floor inspection

Your Tasker may start by testing your floors for moisture and concrete sealer. Next, they'll check if it's a new slab that will need 28 days of curing. Lastly, your specialist will inspect the floor paint. If the floor uses polyurethane or latex paints, they'll strip or soda blast your floor before the actual epoxy coating.

Degreasing and preparing the floor

First, your specialist removes oil and grease stains using a degreaser. They'll then rinse the floor and sand off any rubber residue (common in garages or driveways). Any other debris or products will be vacuumed up and washed using a pressure washer. It's essential to keep the floor completely dirt-free since any particles can cause bubbles in the epoxy coating.

Next, your floorer etches the floor using muriatic acid, then neutralises and removes it. Afterwards, they'll rinse the floor and leave it to dry overnight. The following day, your Tasker patches cracks with epoxy crack filler and waits for it to dry. Drying time may take up to 6 hours.

Applying the epoxy resin floor paint

Next, your epoxy floor contractor preps the coating products. Unless you've specified your choice before the job, they may ask you to choose between solvent and water-based epoxies, as well as the percentage of solids in the product.

Solvent-based epoxy comes in various colours but emits extremely hazardous fumes that require a ventilator to use. Meanwhile, water-based epoxy is clear-coloured but safer. When it comes to epoxy content, a higher percentage means a harder floor (and a more expensive bill).

Final epoxy coat and drying time

Your floorer may then apply the epoxy primer, especially if your floor is porous, flaky, chalky, or rough. This step helps smooth out imperfections and strengthen the floor.

After the primer coat is applied, they proceed to apply two coats of epoxy.

Once the first coating is done, your resin floor coating specialist lets it dry for 24 hours. They'll then check and repair any cracks or uneven surfaces and let the filler dry for 12-16 hours. Finally, they'll apply a second coat and a non-skid product, then let it dry for 24 hours.
