Top Flyscreen Installation related questions

If your flyscreen only has a few minor holes, you may be able to get it patched up. Otherwise, if it’s got multiple areas with damage or large holes that are big enough to let bugs inside, you’ll need to get it replaced.
No. Standard flyscreen mesh isn’t strong enough to keep your home secure. You’ll need to use special security mesh for this.
With normal use, your flyscreen should last 3-5 years. But pets, wildlife, and small children can wear your screen out faster, so be sure to replace or repair it once you notice holes.
Small holes can be patched up using special flyscreen repair patches. Larger (or multiple) holes are better off with a full replacement.
It usually costs around $9-$20 to purchase a replacement flyscreen. The cost will depend on the type of flyscreen and the size of your surface. This doesn’t include labour, which is extra.
The average cost of installing flyscreens ranges from $67-$180 when you book your service through Airtasker. This will vary depending on the number of doors, windows, and screens, the total surface area, and how long the job will take.

What does a flyscreen installation include?

Flyscreen specialists can help with all aspects of installing and repairing mesh coverings on your doors and windows. Many also offer security screens and pet-proof screens for extra protection. Here’s what you can expect from some of the most common flyscreen services:

Window flyscreen installations

If they’re re-meshing your flyscreen, your installer will start by using a brush to dust any dirt and cobwebs off the mesh and frame, before removing the entire frame to a flat surface. Next, they’ll poke a screwdriver into the frame’s corners to ease out the spline (a long rubber cord that locks the screen in place) and remove the old mesh. Then they’ll unroll the new flyscreen and lay it over the top of the frame, leaving a 10cm overhang. They’ll use a roller to push the spline back in place, locking in the fresh flyscreen mesh. Finally, they’ll trim away excess mesh at the edges before re-installing the window frame. Installing window flyscreens involves different techniques, depending on the window type. But in general, your installer will remove the frame, layout the flyscreen, and lock into place.

Flyscreen door repairs and installations

Installing flyscreens on doors involves a similar process to windows, albeit on a larger scale. Your installer will remove the door frame and lay it flat before rolling out the new flyscreen mesh over the top. They’ll secure the mesh around the edges using a long spline before trimming, then re-fitting your door. It’s worth mentioning that you can choose from a variety of mesh types, including fibreglass mesh (most common and low-cost), pet-proof mesh, aluminium mesh (extra strong), and even one-way mesh (for privacy). Your installer will be able to advise on the best mesh for your budget, environment, and family.

Retractable flyscreens

Retractable flyscreens are a popular option for keeping flies off decks, verandas, and patios. They work like roller blinds, installed so they’re hanging from the edges of your patio roof. Your installer will follow the instructions that come with the kit. But usually, the process involves cutting the parts to fit the size of your space, before installing with a drill.

The brackets on top of the door tracker are chipped and need to be replaced. It means the door has come off the sliding track, and needs to be manually adjusted - this leaves a gap when closed so doesn't properly function.

Flyscreen fitting

$200

Woolooware NSW, Australia

My flyscreen is jammed and there's a gap I can't close. I removed it to let out some fruit flies and was never able to fit it back properly. It's a second story window so I don't want to push myself too hard https://youtu.be/BXSX4irfvak?si=_pfzK_kciLJQaUpK

Was over 2 hours late and affected my weekend plans. Did do some extra mesh change for cheap. Not sure they put the frame back the right way or whether it's 90 degree rotated. There's a gap i'm counting on flies and mozzies not infiltrating.

Installation of existing flyscreen. The flyscreen itself is in good condition without any holes. Some panels have screw missing but i have the plastic pin with me, not the small screw. Total flyscreen- 4 Might be adjusting aome existing ones as well.1-2. I am struggling to decide the right window and put then back on as it keeps on falling or feels a mismatch.

Great service by peter.

Flyscreen replaced in screen door

$200

Redfern NSW 2016, Australia

9th Mar 2025

Need flyscreen replaced in screen door. I've pulled out the old fly screen. It looks like there might be enough space to replace the screen without needing to remove the door from its frame. Price includes the tasker supplying fly screen. Inner frame of door measures 197cm by 98cm. original screen is 200cm by 102cm and it looks like the original spline can be reused. I also have a cupboard knob where the screw has broken off inside - if you could drill it out/remove the screw too.

super fast and efficient, really happy with my new fly screen
