What does a flyscreen installation include?
Flyscreen specialists can help with all aspects of installing and repairing mesh coverings on your doors and windows. Many also offer security screens and pet-proof screens for extra protection. Here’s what you can expect from some of the most common flyscreen services:
Window flyscreen installations
If they’re re-meshing your flyscreen, your installer will start by using a brush to dust any dirt and cobwebs off the mesh and frame, before removing the entire frame to a flat surface. Next, they’ll poke a screwdriver into the frame’s corners to ease out the spline (a long rubber cord that locks the screen in place) and remove the old mesh. Then they’ll unroll the new flyscreen and lay it over the top of the frame, leaving a 10cm overhang. They’ll use a roller to push the spline back in place, locking in the fresh flyscreen mesh. Finally, they’ll trim away excess mesh at the edges before re-installing the window frame. Installing window flyscreens involves different techniques, depending on the window type. But in general, your installer will remove the frame, layout the flyscreen, and lock into place.
Flyscreen door repairs and installations
Installing flyscreens on doors involves a similar process to windows, albeit on a larger scale. Your installer will remove the door frame and lay it flat before rolling out the new flyscreen mesh over the top. They’ll secure the mesh around the edges using a long spline before trimming, then re-fitting your door. It’s worth mentioning that you can choose from a variety of mesh types, including fibreglass mesh (most common and low-cost), pet-proof mesh, aluminium mesh (extra strong), and even one-way mesh (for privacy). Your installer will be able to advise on the best mesh for your budget, environment, and family.
Retractable flyscreens
Retractable flyscreens are a popular option for keeping flies off decks, verandas, and patios. They work like roller blinds, installed so they’re hanging from the edges of your patio roof. Your installer will follow the instructions that come with the kit. But usually, the process involves cutting the parts to fit the size of your space, before installing with a drill.
