What does general labouring include?

General labourers are skilled in a range of maintenance and labour tasks. Many have a trade background with specific skills in one area, while others are happy to work under your direction and provide a willing hand with whatever you’re doing. Here are some of the most common general labouring tasks and what you can expect:

Cleaning and maintenance

Common labouring jobs involve cleaning, especially cleaning up a worksite after tradespeople have finished. They’ll start by clearing out larger debris using a wheelbarrow and shovel, and loading it into a skip or trailer. Next, they’ll sweep the area to remove small debris, dirt, and dust. Finally, they may mop or pressure wash all suitable surfaces (depending on whether it’s inside or outside), paying special attention to any stains, mortar, or grout that’s been left behind.

Trades assistance

While labourers aren’t necessarily licensed tradespeople, they do often help out tradespeople with plumbing, carpentry, and building tasks. Carpenters or builders may get help with removing old structures, moving wood, steadying framework, and other tasks that need an extra pair of hands. Plumbers may need help with cleaning up, moving pipework, and lifting parts. In any case, the licensed tradesperson will oversee the work and ensure it is carried out safely and to a high standard.

Digging holes and trenches

General labouring often involves digging - especially by hand. Your labourer will bring their own shovel and other required tools, or you may supply the tools at the worksite. They may help dig holes for fencesdig trenches for drainage, remove stumps, or level out soil ready for landscaping.

Moving and loading

Your labourer can help move materials from one part of your site to another or load them onto a truck or trailer. These materials could include soil, gravel, roadbase, timber, bricks, paving, garden waste, corrugated iron, rocks, plants, and even furniture. They’ll use a combination of tools, depending on the job, including shovels, forks, wheelbarrows, and gloves.

$300

Mitchelton QLD, Australia

29th Nov 2022

Looking for a handyman, tradesman, or labourer who has experience in rope/knot skills and abseiling, climbing or working at heights experience for the following. - Tie rope around 12 sandbags into something like a parcel knot to hold securely. - Secure 3 tarps to the ground and bank (either through pegs in the ground, or securing to a fence, the latter will be done while on the bank). - Attach 12 sandbags to 12 tarp eyelets in the 3 tarps. Some will need to be attached while on the bank. - Securely tie 4 separate ropes around steel house stumps, each rope will be approx 10-20m in length. The tarp work is to replace existing tarp/sandbags installed earlier this year. Work will be done on a flat back garden area and on the bank, so the sandbags must be very well secured. I will be onsite and will supply the tarp, sandbags (BCC), pegs, and rope. Any other materials needed, to be discussed. Person must have rope/knot experience and working at heights experience. Task can be completed morning or afternoon, week days or week ends, preferable as soon as possible. Not sure how long this would take, so price accordingly for the job. - Due date: Flexible

Labour to install DIY vj wall panel/ feature wall

$400

Gaythorne QLD 4051, Australia

22nd Jul 2022

I would like to create a feature wall in the living room with Laminex vj wall panels from Bunnings. This involves installing panels to existing wall. No need to paint. Looking at the installation videos, you don’t touch the existing skirting or cornice. Just cut provision for powerpoint, light switches etc, and install the panels with glue and nail on to existing plastered wall. I will add a link to the videos later. Existing plastered wall is 3m x 3m Purchased panels are at Bunnings ready for pick up. So need you to: Pick up panels from Stafford Bunnings (if I can't do so before you start) Supply labour to cut panels to size, install, patch up holes etc Cover the end of the panel where there is no adjoining panel. Add plastic/ timber trim or no more gap to make it flushed (can you supply? Alternatively I can supply if you tell me what to buy. No need to paint. - Due date: Flexible

Thank you Warren for getting the job done. I like the plastic trim.
