Fix home networking

Shrey really knows his stuff We had extensive problems with our home network which was affecting speed and/or led to internet dropouts and Sonos internet wasn’t working. Shrey came with me to Office Works to buy the 24 port switching hub , he relocated the old Apple router and reconfigured the Telstra modem, he advised me on how to get Sonos music system working again. Internet now works perfectly on all LAN sockets and wifi throughout the house is lightning fast. He also simplified and rearranged the tangled mess of wires cables and leads in our tech cabinet so it all makes sense now and it’s much cleaner. I couldn’t be happier with the outcome that he achieved for us. Thank you Shrey, good job !

Top Home Network Setup related questions

There are three ways to set up remote access to a home network. You can use NAS or Network Attached Storage, use a Remote Desktop tool, or look into third-party software. Feel free to ask your home network setup specialist about the best remote access option for your needs.

If you want a VPN for your home network, you can buy a router with a pre-built VPN solution. You can also try looking for a router that supports third-party router firmware. This lets you “customize” your router’s operating system, including using it with VPN software. Or, you can ask a Tasker about integrating a VPN into your home network.

The main difference between wired and wireless home networks is that wired networks use cables and take more time to set up since you’ll need to run multiple wires. Meanwhile, wireless networks use a wireless router and access point. Wired networks run faster than wireless home networks. But the former may not work with smaller devices, such as smartphones and tablets.

To set up a wireless home network, you’ll need a wireless router, wireless access point, Ethernet hub or switch, connectors, and broadband filters. You’ll need to set up your router and router interface first. Then, make sure that you get a good WiFi signal in every corner of your home. Only then can you connect devices to the internet. A home networking service can make sure to do these steps correctly and swiftly.

A basic home network will need a telephone socket, a telephone connection to your internet service provider, broadband filter, router (or wireless router and access point), and DSL modem. You’ll also need cables, switches, sockets, cable couplers, and cable splitters. Suppose your workspace isn’t ideal for the electrical requirements of a home network (especially if your house or building is old). In this case, you might consider rewiring your current electrical system

Some home network Taskers may also know how to repair appliances. But expertise may vary from Tasker to Tasker. To address each of your computer concerns thoroughly, you can post separate tasks for home network setup and appliance repair

What do home network setup services include?

Home network setup services typically include gathering the components (hardware and software) to set up your wired or wireless home network. Setting up your home network may also involve configuring security settings and connecting all devices in your home (or workplace) to the internet.

A home network setup service does not include assembling your PC—though you can get this done by posting a separate task on our platform. Here’s an overview of the tasks involved in a home network installation service:

Gathering the components for your home network installation

Your Tasker can guide you in choosing the correct hardware and software for your home network setup. If needed, you can also ask your Tasker to obtain the additional supplies for your installation.

Hardware requirements typically include:

  • A telephone socket

  • Telephone connection to your internet service provider (ISP)

  • Broadband filter

  • Router

  • Wireless access point

  • DSL modem

Optional components are WiFi extenders or repeaters, cables, and cable couplers/splitters. You may also need to install some new switches and sockets to your home.

Meanwhile, software requirements may include:

  • A firewall

  • Internet connection sharing (ICS)

  • A computer that will be designated as a router

Connecting your router

Your local network installer needs to ensure all your devices (laptops, desktops, etc.) have a network adapter compatible with your router. Then, they’ll switch off the DSL modem and power up your router. They’ll plug network cables into the router port labelled “Internet” or “WAN.” The other end will go into your modem.

Once the internet signal is strong on both the router and modem, the Tasker will connect the laptops and other devices to the internet.

Accessing and securing the router’s interface

Next, the home network setup specialist will usually connect one laptop to the router and access the router’s interface via a browser, the default IP (Internet Protocol) address, default administrator account, and password. The specialist will then change that laptop’s IP settings to match your router’s settings. This process makes it easy to make any configurations through that particular laptop.

Adjusting your security and IP address settings

Your home network must be secure from cyberattacks (or even just your next-door neighbor leeching off your WiFi). A Tasker can secure your network through the router management interface, usually under the “Security” menu. Having problems with your internet speed? Your computer specialist may also look into the issue and troubleshoot for viruses that might have infected your device.

Setting up a group and user accounts

Home network setup may also include creating a group for easily sharing files, pictures, and printers. Once this step is done, the Tasker sets up user accounts. This can help parents or bosses limit their kids’ or employees’ access to the internet, including who can view and edit documents, see certain file folders, and so on.

The exact process for setting up the group and user accounts may vary depending on the operating system that your devices have. Still, the result will be the same: a secure, easy-to-use wired (or wireless) home network!

Hi, I need assistance with some home networking. I've got a D-Link AC2600 Wi-Fi router and a Netgear Powerline Ethernet adapter. I'm paying for 250mbps, but I'm not getting anywhere close to that. I just wanted to see if anyone can help. Or even trouble shoot and figure out if the provider or any of the equipment is at fault. I appreciate any help you can provide. I have no idea what budget this normally is going to put $50 for now will work it out from there...negotiable.

I recently purchased a NETGEAR Nighthawk rs700s router. At first it was running smoothly and as of recently, it keeps dropping off the internet and I always have to reset it almost everyday. I need someone to fix this or give me a solution as to what to do to set it up so that it stops doing this. It’s connected to a modem and the ISP is Superloop.

Rayyan was extremely knowledgeable and knows his stuff. However, wasn’t able to completely finalise my issues due to my area not having reception and him being interstate. I know had he been here in person, my networking issues would have been solved.

Home networking issue - Access Point Set-up

Cabramatta West NSW, Australia

I have recently purchased a 5G modem from Optus. However, based on the location of the modem & in the house, this is in one of the rooms at the back of the house. However, we primarily sit / use the space at the front of the house. We have a 2nd router acting as an access point, connected via blue ethernet cables. The problem we are facing at the moment is that the connection on the 2nd router is sometimes unstable. It says that we are connected to the Internet, but connection comes & goes? I have had trouble using my 2nd router connection on my work laptop when using VPN too.

I run 2 WIndows machines on a hardwired ethernet home network. The setup has worked fine for years, but recently I had one machine replaced, and the other reformatted (long story). In the process, the network settings were lost, as usual I've tried to get things back and retired defeated. This should be a straightforward job for anyone with good windows networking skills.
