Fantastic job and a really knowledgeable and decent Instaler. My car was turned down as being to difficult by every big and mobile installer in town due to it being to complicated for them. What does a mechanic service usually include?

Mechanics are skilled in nearly all aspects of keeping your car maintained, serviced, and repaired, so it’s roadworthy and efficient to run. The exact process during your service will depend on how your mechanic prefers to work and the type of tasks they’re doing, like:

Minor service

This is the most basic engine service a mechanic provides, but it can make a huge difference in whether or not your car can operate efficiently. A minor service usually alternates with a major service, at around the 6-month mark. A mechanic near you can do minor services because your mechanic only needs a flat service to get the job done. They’ll unscrew the sump plug, allowing old oil to drain from your car. Then they’ll remove the old oil filter and replace with a new one that’s the right size for your vehicle. Your mechanic will dispose of your old filter and oil. They’ll also inspect other key components, like your battery, lights, air filters, and other fluids.

Log book servicing / major service

A major service or log book service involves a series of steps in line with your vehicle manufacturer’s service manual. It’ll include a combination of major and minor services, depending on the age of your car, or how many kilometres it’s travelled. Your service may include testing your lights, brakes, and battery. Then checking fluid levels, windscreen wipers, windows, mirrors, steering, suspension, radiator, fan belts, and tyre pressure. Finally, it may also include maintaining/replacing oil filters, hoses, belts, tyres, and wheel alignment. Your mechanic will finish off by stamping your logbook to record the services completed, which can help maintain your car’s resale value.

Roadworthy certificate or pink slip

A roadworthy certificate or pink slip is a specific vehicle check that’s conducted to ensure your car is in a roadworthy condition and can be operated safely. In some states, it’s required when selling a car or may be required each year to confirm your vehicle is safe for registration purposes. A mechanic will check off a list of predetermined items to verify that your car meets a minimum safety standard set out by your state government. They’ll focus on safety, checking things like tyres, brakes, steering, suspension, rust or damage, seatbelts, windows, lights, and your windscreen.

Major and minor repairs

Sometimes your car might need a little extra attention if you’ve had an accident, broken down, or your drive feels a bit different to normal. A car mechanic can perform minor and major repairs on most vehicles. They’ll use diagnostic equipment to locate the issue and decide on a course of action to get your car back on the road. If they don’t have the necessary spare parts, they may need to order them to finish off your repair and replace any faulty parts. Note that a mechanic service is usually limited to your car’s engine and electrics. It’s best to speak to a panel beater if you also have external body damage.

Mechanic - engine oil over filled

$100

Collaroy NSW, Australia

19th Mar 2025

Vehicle: 2013 Volkswagen Golf Mk6 Comfortline TSI 118 Wagon (AJ5 1.4 TSI Engine) Issue Description: Engine oil was at zero. Added 5L of oil (instead of 3.5L) and drove for 10 minutes with the oil cap missing. Engine slowed down gradually and stalled. After waiting 30 minutes, the engine cranked once but would not start. Now, when turning the key to "ON," the A/C system cycles on and off erratically. and there's a few signs on the dash ABS etc Request for Diagnosis & Fixes: 1️⃣ Drain Excess Oil & Check Oil Condition Drain oil to correct level (3.5L max). Check if oil is foamy/aerated (indicating oil pump cavitation). Replace oil & filter if aeration is present. 2️⃣ Inspect & Clean PCV System & Intake Check if oil entered the PCV system or intake manifold. If oil is present, clean the throttle body & PCV hoses. 3️⃣ Inspect Spark Plugs & Cylinders for Oil Contamination Remove spark plugs; check if they are fouled with oil. If oil is in cylinders, clear it before attempting restart. 4️⃣ Check Electrical Components (Sensors & Alternator) Inspect crankshaft & camshaft position sensors for oil contamination. Test the alternator & battery voltage (possible oil damage). Ensure all ground connections & wiring harnesses are clean. 5️⃣ Manually Rotate Crankshaft Use a socket on the crank pulley to check if the engine turns freely. If it doesn’t turn, diagnose hydrolock or bearing seizure. 6️⃣ Check Timing Chain Alignment (If No Start) Verify if the timing chain tensioner lost oil pressure, causing misalignment. 7️⃣ Scan for Error Codes (OBD2 Diagnostics) Retrieve any stored codes related to crankshaft/camshaft sensors, misfires, or oil pressure issues. Priority Actions Before Restart Attempt: ✔️ Drain excess oil to proper level. ✔️ Clean PCV, intake, and sensors if oil is present. ✔️ Check spark plugs & battery voltage. ✔️ Manually crank engine before using starter.
