What do pet grooming services include?
More than a haircut for dogs or cats, pet grooming services include all the tasks necessary to make your dog, cat, pet bird, lizard or other exotic pet looking their best and in some cases, smelling good. As a service that’s part of pet care, this can include pre-grooming services like brushing the fur, clipping overgrown fur or feathers whenever applicable.Â
This service can also include bathing and shampooing your pet, followed by drying them then trimming nails, claws, or beak when applicable. Your groomer cleans out the ears and paws if needed, all while keeping their safety and comfort in mind.Â
Pre-grooming
Your groomer brushes their hair to loosen any matted or bunched-up clumps of fur. Next, they trim the overgrown fur with electric clippers while your pet is placed in a comfortable sitting or standing position. This is a full-body trim to remove long and severely matted fur and prepare your pet for bathing. For reptiles or amphibians, your groomer wipes any dirt or debris off them before they are placed in a bath. Â Â
Bathing your pet
If your cat or dog is a short-haired breed or doesn’t need fur trimming, your groomer proceeds with the bath. A restraining collar or harness is fitted on your pet to keep them calm and still. Your groomer may apply a hypoallergenic facial scrub and rinse your pet with warm water. The groomer takes care not to get any water into your pet’s ears or nose as their muzzle gets scrubbed and rinsed.Â
Next, your groomer scrubs your pet with hypoallergenic shampoo, then rinses it off. They may follow up with another good scrub of a fur conditioning product, rinsing this off as well. To finish the bath, your pet gets a full-body rinse with lukewarm water, gets brushed with a grooming comb, then rinsed with cool water to wash off all the shampoo and conditioner.Â
For reptiles or amphibians, your groomer can give them a soak or spray bath of conditioning fluid to maintain their skin and help loosen the skin they shed. Your pet lizard or amphibian is allowed to soak in a small tub for a few minutes to absorb the nutrients in the bath. Â
Drying your pet
Once your pet has been scrubbed clean, groomers will proceed to dry them. They can use towels, hairdryers or a combination of both to dry off your furry pets gently. For reptiles and amphibians, they can dry them off by gently dabbing them with towels. Â
Final touches
After your pet is dried off, groomers can apply finishing touches like trimming their nails and fur for a more even coat (even trimming the feathers, claws or beak when applicable). Some groomers may apply perfume or scent specially formulated for your pet.Â
