Rendering is the process of applying a render (which is made of lime, sand, cement, bonding agents, and colourants) over the exterior or interior house surfaces, like brick and concrete. Rendering is a popular investment for many homeowners because it can improve kerbside appeal and help protect surfaces.

Resurfacing involves repairing cracks and impurities before applying a finish and is usually done on interior surfaces in bathrooms and kitchens. Rendering is usually done on walls or fences and involves adding a whole new layer of cement and/or texture.

Some of the most common rendering home projects include rendering both interior and exterior concrete and brick walls. Kitchen benchtops and bath resurfacing are popular projects for resurfacing if you’re doing a home renovation on a budget.

Usually, your renderer will have all the tools and supplies they need to complete the rendering job for you. Once they know what space they’re working with and the colours and finishes you need, they’ll order in the supplies needed to get the job done.

Depending on the scope of the project, rendering can take anywhere from a few hours to a few weeks. On average, rendering the exterior of a medium-sized home takes five days to complete, although it will take longer for your surfaces to finish drying.

The average cost of rendering is $150-$500 when you hire through Airtasker. The exact price will depend on the time it takes to prepare the surfaces for rendering, the type and size of surfaces, any finishes, and the type of rendering you’ve chosen (cement or acrylic).

What do rendering services include?

The exact inclusions of your rendering service will depend on what you need. If you’re not sure, your renderer can talk you through whether rendering is suitable for your surface, and whether cement or acrylic rendering is best for your project, along with what colour and textures will suit.

Here are some of the most popular rendering services and what you can expect from each:

Exterior wall rendering

Exterior wall rendering not only protects walls from the elements but can help lift the appearance of your home. Your renderer will start by chatting with you about the best render materials to use for your exterior, and any colours or finishes. They’ll prepare the walls and repair any structural defects. They may remove external features, like rainwater pipes, before they begin the rendering process. Next, they’ll measure and mix the render - usually in a concrete mixer or wheelbarrow. Your renderer will plaster the material on your walls using a trowel and add a decorative finish or texture if desired. They may finish off the job with a weather-proof layer of paint.

Interior wall rendering

Need interior walls rendered? The interior rendering process is normally referred to as plastering. It’s often used to coat walls and surfaces (like bricks) to make it smooth and flat for painting. Or to add interesting textures and effects. Your plasterer will mix dry materials with water and apply the plaster to your interior wall surfaces. You’ll need to allow around a week for your plastered walls to dry before painting.

Fence or retaining wall rendering

Your renderer can also render your fences or retaining walls to match the exterior render of your home for a uniform, modern look. Your renderer will likely recommend a smooth or medium texture so that water can’t get trapped in the pockets. They’ll prepare the surface, mix the render, and apply it using a trowel. They’ll use a range of tools to create your preferred texture and finish off with paint to help weather-proof your fence.

Kitchen and bathroom resurfacing

Resurfacing is popular in both kitchen renovation and bathroom renovation projects because it can give your home a fresh, new look without replacing any tiles or fixtures. Popular resurfacing locations include wall tiles, baths, basins, shower trays, vanity tops, and benchtops. Your resurfacing professional will start by confirming your preferences, like the colour and level of gloss you’d like. Then they’ll use sheets and masking tape to protect any areas in the room not being resurfaced. Next, they’ll remove any silicone and deep clean the surface for maximum adhesion. If needed, they’ll do minor repairs, such as removing chips and scratches and smoothing out the surface through sanding and etching. Finally, they’ll apply the primer and topcoat in line with your preferred colour and finish, reapplying silicon and removing the masking tape.

Design and 3d render for renovation

$300

Durack QLD, Australia

14th Feb 2025

[[Previous task got cancelled due to assignee personal circumstances]] Looking for someone, be it architect, recent architecture graduates or final year students wanting some experience, I want to iterate through a few ideas for renovations of a two-storey house built in the 1970s in Brisbane. Foundation, brick veneer, on a slope. We don't have any official house plans etc so we would rely on your knowledge of house structures in that period that were built in Queensland. Not planning to submit DA or anything at this stage, I have a few ideas of what I might want to do and I need to visualise it to help me communicate and get quotes from tradies etc. If you're in town, more than happy for you to inspect the site and measure things with me, but otherwise I am happy to provide pictures and measurements. If you are familiar with Australia building code, it's a plus. If you have creative minds and can contribute ideas on how to make the house super modern, even better. The budget for this initial stage can't be shifted too much but it might have follow up tasks if I end up needing a proper drawing for DA or for a structural engineer approval. In your offer if you could indicate whether you're a registered architect/engineer in Australia (with registration numbers) that would be great, or if you're a graduate or final year student, which university are you from etc. Relative familiarity with australia building codes and structural practicality is important for exterior design. Have a look at references and see if our design language matches As an output to this task: Current state of the property 1x 3d render 1x 2d floor plan 1x 2d house plan incl exterior lot and slope Short term renovations (minor changes to current state such as kitchen, deck and stairs balustrade , retaining wall, Aircon, roof replacement, garage door, landscape) 1x 3d render Long term renovation (house extension, deck and fence changes, staircase movement, bathroom reno and flooring changes): 1x 3d render

Zaid is honest and discuss task details to clearly understand requirements upfront. When the task has limited budget he would assist in prioritisation of efforts, ensuring the money is spent on achieving the most critical requirements. Would recommend.

Rendering stucco patch on small section of exterior wall

$200

Cornubia QLD, Australia

12th Feb 2025

Need to have someone render a section of exterior wall, rendered to match the current rendering texture. This matching is a must. This patch repaired area is from an old wall air conditioner that was removed. Right now I’m offering for this one small project. There are other areas that need work, but for now I’d like a quote for this render repair. Thanks. Size you can probably straight up see on photo based on bessablocks used.

Excellent! Render looks good. Reliable. Thanks.
