What do starter motor repair services include?
A failing starter motor is a relatively common vehicle problem. It's heavily responsible for starting the internal combustion engine to keep your car moving. Even with the best care and maintenance, it's bound to age and wear out eventually. If you're starting to notice symptoms of system failure, then it's best to seek help from an expert. Airtasker can help you find a professional auto electrician or sparky who specialises in starter motor repair, regardless of how complex the issue is.
Here's what you can expect taskers to fix:
Faulty Electrical Connections
Since a starter motor requires multiple electrical connections to operate, even a single loosened wire can cause the entire system to fail. Cables are also prone to dirt and corrosion build-up as they're regularly exposed to all sorts of acids and substances inside your engine. All these factors may lead to breakage, but your specialist can repair or replace any loose or broken wiring to ensure that your engine is at its best working condition at all times.
Defective Starter Solenoid
If you hear a weird clicking sound every time you try to start your engine, or if it doesn't start at all, this may be due to a damaged solenoid. In this case, one of the most common causes of a defective solenoid is excessive heating. Once the ignition key has long been left in the starting position, the soldering in the main contacts can melt and end up welded together. Fortunately, this part can be replaced separately without the need to replace the entire starter motor.
Worn Out Mechanical Parts
One faulty starter motor part can already cause a series of problems. Since most of its components are made of metal, coil, and iron, they're at high risk for corrosion which can damage your entire motor system. Some issues can also be attributed to lost gears or springs, and dirty or worn-out motor brushes, armature, commutators, and field coils, among others.
Starter Motor Replacement
If there are more significant problems within your starter motor that makes it nearly inoperable, a replacement may be a more practical choice. Your specialist can assist you with purchasing a new motor system that suits your vehicle and completing a professional starter motor replacement job.

Car is a 1996 Subaru Impreza GX 2WD Auto Hatch. Starter sits pretty high in engine bay and appears to be reasonably readily accessible. Just clicks when the key is turned - NRMA suggests the starter motor is dead. Need someone to source a replacement starter motor and fit. Car is in a level garage. Would be happy to take your advice on whether a S/H, rebuilt or new starter motor is most appropriate. Needs to be done in the next few days. Banora Point NSW (South Tweed Heads). Note: Airtasker interface seems to be messing with due dates (maybe timezone issues). To clarify: ideally I'd like the starter motor to be sourced and installed on Saturday or Sunday (sooner the better) but Monday at the latest. I realize that this is a big ask and apologize. --- Additional info: Sales documents identify the vehicle as: "Impreza GX 2WD Auto Hatch (I2GXHA)". Can't find much use of that code string anywhere. Reg Cert shows the Car Model as IMPR93B variant 1.88 SED with an engine capacity of 1820. Supercheap lookup of the online registration database translates this to: "SUBARU IMPREZA GX Auto or Manual GF, G10 GF5 04/1993~11/1996 4 Door Wagon FWD PETROL 1.8 litre, EJ18E F4 16v SOHC MPFI {76kW}" but it doesn't appear that they stock a suitable part. I assume someone sufficiently well informed could turn all that into a part number for the starter motor.
Dean was great! He addressed all points I raised in my original task description and worked through the process of identifying the exact starter motor required with me ensuring we got the correct unit first go. He fitted in with my unreasonable schedule requirements without complaint. The starter turned over first try and there was no mess left behind. I have no hesitation in recommending Dean's work.
