Build an MDF false chimney breast with coving and skirting board
£550
Hornsey Vale, Greater London
13th Feb 2022
I would like a false chimney breast (MDF only, no plaster board) constructed to mount a TV and with a couple of shelves either side. See picture 2-4 below for something similar to what I’m after (with the cutout hole underneath and side shelving). There are a couple of switches that would be covered that I would need access to so wondering if a small door/hatch could be made on the right hand side for access, or potentially allow for storage inside the unit. Would also need skirting board and coving to match the current ones In the provided photo I’d like the unit to be built where the heater is fixed to the wall on the left (old photo - the heater has now been moved) - Due date: Flexible

What does a skirting board service include?
You can request for skirting board fitting and repair right here on Airtasker. Our experts take care of buying the skirting boards and bringing the necessary tools for the job. You can also opt to get these yourself and just book this service to take care of the actual labour.Â
The exact details of what a skirting board expert can or can’t do may vary. That’s why it’s best to make your task post as detailed as possible. This helps potential Taskers evaluate your request better and come up with a suitable offer.Â
In general, here’s what you can expect when you book a skirting board service via Airtasker:Â
Skirting board materials and tools
Just like with any other construction job, you’ll need materials and tools. Your tradesman takes care of buying the skirting boards, depending on what you specified in the task post in terms of length and height. In case you don’t have anything in mind yet, they may stop by your location first, do a bit of measuring, then go to your local hardware.Â
They also arrive with the necessary tools in tow. These include a coping saw, ear muffs, safety glasses, a nail gun, a tape measure, and a hammer. If you already have some of these materials at home, you could ask your tradesman to bring only the ones that aren’t in your toolbox. It all depends on your preference and what your skirting board service requires.
Fitting or installing skirting boards
Your tradesman begins by measuring each part of the wall and marking the skirting boards. They’ll cut the boards at 45-degree angles, then cut the scribed joint. The scribed joint makes sure that the boards line up nicely at the corners of the room. Â
Then, they cut the skirting board at 90-degree angles on both ends and start attaching it to the wall. They’ll take the board with the scribed joint, cut it to size, then push it against this first skirting board. Once they’re happy with the fit, your tradesman attaches it to the first board.
After that, it’s pretty much the same process all around the room - or every room in your house. Â
Redoing skirting boards
Skirting boards protect your wall from wear and tear, so you’ll inevitably have to redo them after years of living in your home. This process is pretty much the same as installation, except that your tradesman has to remove the current skirting boards first. This involves removing any cables or obstructions, breaking the plaster, removing the skirting boards, and getting rid of nails and screws. It’s a rather tedious process, so it’ll take longer and possibly cost more compared to starting in a bare room.
Working with skirting boards can get pretty messy, so it’s advisable to get after-builders cleaning to tidy up your house afterwards. Don’t tire yourself picking up after your handymen or construction workers - get cleaning experts to do it instead!
