Some common dog training techniques your dog trainer may use include:

Dog training costs depend on your location, whether the trainer comes to you, your trainer’s experience, and the type of training. A private dog trainer may charge anywhere from £40 - £100 per session, while group dog training classes cost anywhere from £120 - £250 for a 6-week program.

What does a dog training class include?

Dog training includes a range of techniques and lessons to help your dog learn obedience, commands, and appropriate behaviours in different environments. While it’s ideal if you start training while your pup is young (approx 2-3 months old), more mature dogs can also benefit from dog training. Here are a few things you can expect from a dog training class or session:

Responding to commands

A dog trainer will help you train your dog to respond to voice commands, like sit, stay, heel, and come (when you call them). Your trainer will help show you how to establish leadership over your dog so that they listen to your commands and do what they’re told. Common techniques used are movement, actions, eye contact, treats, and praise.

Leash obedience

Leash obedience is essential for safe and comfortable dog walking, so you can be motivated and confident to take your dog for regular walks. Your dog trainer will gradually introduce your dog to their collar and leash, using playtime and treats so they associate it with good times. You’ll practice walking around with your dog on a leash in a safe, enclosed area. Once your puppy is comfortable with their leash, you can gradually introduce them to different outside environments.

House training

House training or toilet training your puppy is something you’ll want to start from the moment you bring your dog home, to minimise messes. If you can get a dog trainer near you to train your puppy at home, it’ll make it much easier to house-train your dog. Your dog trainer will give you tips around the best feeding schedules, when and where to take your puppy to do their business, and how to reinforce good house training practices with praise and treats.

Socialising

Your dog trainer can help you socialise your dog - both to animals and people. If they organise dog training classes with a group of pets and owners, it’s a safe environment for your dog to get used to being around other animals and people. If your dog’s having a tough time adjusting, your trainer will step in with some strategies like regular walking in suitable areas, remaining calm, gentle touch, and limiting new social events to once a week.
