Loft Ladder Installation needed

£100

Deep was impressive from the first contact. He thought through the job (could the part be repaired rather than replaced? I like that thinking), asked the right questions, kept in touch, arrived as arranged and fully prepared (brought a replacement part with him, so no time-wasting). Polite, reliable, efficient, did the job. And didn’t charge a crazy amount. This is the way to win customers who will keep coming back. I definitely will. 5 Stars, no question.

Top Loft Ladder Installation related questions

Similar to render repair, conservatory repairs, shed roof repair and garage door fitters, a loft ladder installation is a particular service that can make it harder for people to source professionals. But with Airtasker, it can be easy to find a skilled handyman for jobs like these - the installation can go without a hitch. The loft ladder will be safe, and you can use it without hassles, so you get your money’s worth.
Usually, you don’t need to provide any tools or equipment for your loft ladder installation service. Most Taskers come prepared with the tools and equipment to do the jobs you hire them for, and they’re already quite skilled and comfortable with using them. However, if you have any tools or equipment that you think can help make their job easier, feel free to lend these to them for the duration of the job.
The time it takes to install a loft ladder can vary from Tasker to Tasker, but a loft ladder installation without putting in a new trapdoor and fabricating a box frame can take two to three hours at most. But if the job is more complicated, such as needing a trapdoor and a box frame to be made, you can expect the entire process to take the whole day.
Absolutely! If you are a handyman yourself and want to hire someone to assist you in providing this service, feel free to hire a Tasker through our platform. Just be sure to be specific about this in your job posting to avoid any misunderstanding.
The most common loft ladders are timber, aluminium and the accordion-like metal concertina ladder. Each type has its advantages and drawbacks, so research on these and don’t base your choice on looks alone. You should choose the ladder that takes up the least amount of space, is the safest to use, and is from a reputable brand that constructs the ladder from durable material.
You can install a loft ladder by yourself, but there are some caveats. It would help if you had the time, the right tools, skills and the experience. You must also have sufficient physical strength; these ladders are difficult for one person to get onto an elevated spot, due to their weight and bulk. It’s usually better to have someone assist you or hire a handyman with the requisite skills and equipment for this task.

Handyman Services

What do Loft Ladder Installation services include?

Your loft ladder installation service includes all that’s required to get any loft ladders fitted and provide easy and safe access to your upper storage or living spaces. The service consists of taking the measurements, installing the box frame, fitting in the ladder, installing the loft hatch and making any necessary adjustments.

Doing the measurements

Your handyman takes the necessary measurements at the area where you intend to have your loft hatch and ladder installation. This step includes measuring the distance from the floor to the spot on the ceiling where the hatch will be placed; this will determine the allowable ladder length.

They also measure the length of the loft ladder when retracted. The measurement determines the dimensions for the hatch or trapdoor (which houses and tucks away the ladder up into the loft or attic).

Cutting the hatch

If your home doesn’t already have a hatch in your ceiling, your handyman can cut out the hatch for you. Be sure to pick a spot in your roof that won’t cut through structural pieces, or have electrical wiring running through them. Consult a loft ladder expert or loft ladder fitters beforehand to find the right spot.

Once you’ve established where the loft ladder can be installed, your handyman measures and marks out a hatch, they then proceed to cut out the hatch from your ceiling.

Installing the box frame

After the hole has been cut out, your handyman proceeds to install a box frame. Be sure to provide the wood to make this frame if one isn’t included or isn’t already part of your loft ladder. Some Taskers may offer to procure the wood from the store if you don’t have these handy. They can then nail or screw the box frame onto rafters surrounding the hatch opening.

Installing the ladder

Once the box frame is done, your handyman can move to the loft hatch and ladder installation. This ladder is fixed to the box frame with nails, screws, or a combination of both. Note that some types of loft ladders are already attached to the hatch door or trapdoor, and some models don’t come with a separate trapdoor.

Inform your handyman beforehand if a separate trapdoor must be fabricated and installed. You can avail of the MDF cutting service to prepare the materials for making a separate trapdoor.

Making final touches

Your hired handyman installs the latch on the trapdoor so you can keep it locked and tucked away when not in use. Any final adjustments are made to the loft ladder, such as tightening screws and adjusting the box frame’s alignment.

If your loft ladder is a timber ladder, the third and final section of the ladder will usually be more than the length needed to reach your floor. Your handyman can measure the excess timber and saw these off at the appropriate angle. After everything is done, your handyman tests the ladder to make sure it’s safe and ready for your use.

Insulate loft hatch having first installed new loft ladder

£300

Hove, East Sussex

2nd Dec 2024

loft hatch is original & glass. It is approx 8ft above quite a wide landing so shouldn't be too hard to access. I need a box of Xmas decorations brought down & also the hatch insulated (am flexible re what with) but think best idea is to stal a drop down ladder (of any type) for future access - so ideally would get all of those done once by someone with their own ladder, who is handy.
