Top Skate Sharpening related questions

If you skate a lot or do it professionally, a skilled Tasker can lighten your workload. You can get your skates sharpened in the comfort of your home when you need it. When you’re too tired, busy or overwhelmed by chores, a Tasker can go to you. Forget about the hassle of driving around looking for a tradesman that does this, or even avoid driving through bad weather to go to a sporting goods store for sharpening.
Usually, no. When you hire Taskers for plumbing, assembly work, building & construction or even a task as uncommon as lawn mower repair, you don’t have to supply them anything. The same rule applies for your ice skate sharpening service. Your Tasker will go to your home with all the necessary tools and equipment for the job. But should you have any tools or equipment on hand, you can lend these to them.
Depending on how small the radius is on your skates and how fast your Tasker works, the service can usually take an hour. Should the radius on your skates be shallow and needs minimal sharpening, this can take less time. The only way this service will take more than an hour is if your Tasker takes extra care in sharpening the blades and they are requested to sharpen more than one pair of skates.
Yes! If you offer skate sharpening services, you can hire Taskers if you need a helping hand. Should there be more jobs than you can handle, you can have your pick of qualified local Taskers to help you take on jobs you’d be forced to turn down otherwise. You can hire the ones with the best ratings and reviews. Just be sure to be clear about why you’re hiring Taskers, so they know what’s expected of them.
That depends on how often you use them. If you’re an avid skater for fun or figure-skate professionally, a good rule to go by is to sharpen your skates every 15 to 20 hours of use. When you skate only a few times a year or skate only during wintertime, have them inspected by a specialist then have them sharpened as necessary.
You can take care of your ice skate blades with necessary care measures, like using an expert service to sharpen them, avoid walking on any other surface apart from ice without any skate guards, especially concrete as these can damage or dull the blades. Basic care includes ensuring that the soles and blades are dried after you use them, remove the skate guards and cover the blades in towel-like soakers before storing.

What do Skate Sharpening services include?

Skate sharpening services from Airtasker include the tasks required to restore your ice skates’ capacity for propelling you through the ice. We can make it easier for you to keep your mobility, balance and ability to do sharp, quick turns when ice skating.

You can get back to your professional or leisure skating with just a post. Skate sharpening specialists can make a close inspection of the blades, sharpen the inner and outer edges, sharpen the toe picks, then polish the blades. We can connect you to local qualified skate sharpening specialists to sharpen your skate blades, and fast.

Inspecting the blades

Before sharpening the blades, your skate sharpening specialist will check them for dull areas. This can be done with equipment like magnifying glasses, or other equipment. They may even use the simple “fingernail test”.

Your specialist runs a fingernail perpendicular to parts of the inner and outer blades. Areas, where the blades stick to the fingernail, are sharp sections; if their fingernail runs smoothly without a hitch, these are the dull areas and need sharpening. There can be other inspection methods that your sharpening specialist may employ.

Sharpening the ice skate blades

Your specialist will sharpen the inner and outer blades to the radius that you want. Note that skate sharpening involves grinding down on the metal and removing small amounts of material, so constant sharpening shortens the lifespan of your skates. Have the skates sharpened when you lose your balance or notice that your skates are making less “snow” when scraping your blades sideways on the ice.

Sharpening the toe picks

After your hired skate sharpening specialist has sharpened the blades on your skate, they proceed to sharpen the toe picks. Your specialist can ensure that these are sharpened or ground down to the same degree as the skate blade to make the toe pick level with the blade.

They can ensure that the “no-skating zone” between the bottom toe pick and the forward balance point of the blades maintains the same angle and distance before sharpening. These will be done for both ice skates.

Polishing the blades

For the final step, your sharpening specialist does the finishing touches on your skate sharpening job by polishing the blades. They do this with a honing stone or similar tool to rub out burrs on the sides of the blades themselves. Your specialist removes these burrs as they are tiny bits of material that can obstruct the cutting surface of your skate blades; these can cause you to lose your balance or even trip on the ice.
