Nasser was really great from start to finish. His initial communication with myself was good and throughout the work he was doing he explained everything to me. He fixed a crack in the door frame and went above and beyond what we had expected him to do. He was professional, friendly and the work was finished to a high standard. We will definitely be using Nasser again.

Top Window Repair related questions

Start by making sure there is no loose glass that could injure family members or pets. If you have a crack in your window and are concerned about wind/rain getting inside, you could place thick tape over the surface to provide a temporary seal.

Common window breakages include cracks, chips, holes, and scratches.

If the tenant caused the window to break through malicious activity or negligence, they’ll need to organise window repairs and pay for them. But if damage has happened due to the property ageing or something else out of the tenant’s control, it’s up to the landlord to pay for the repair.

You don’t need to purchase anything for your window repair unless instructed to by your handyman. They may bring their own equipment and supplies, and will advise you during the service if any parts are needed.

This depends on the size and location of the window. For basic window replacements at ground floor level, this could take as little as 1 hour.

Window repairs usually cost between £60 - £163 when you book your service through Airtasker. But the total cost for your service will depend on the type of window, type of repair, the location of the window, and how long it’ll take to get the job done.

What does a window repair service include?

Your window repair person can help with a range of different window types and repair services, including glass window repairs, aluminium window frame repairs, and even car window repairs. They’ll advise you on the best solution (whether repair or replacement) and use their tools to get the job done. Here’s what you can expect from some of the most common window repair services:

Glass window repairs

Your handyman will start by assessing the damage. If the extent of the damage is beyond repair, they’ll recommend a window replacement. But if your window glass only has a small crack, hole, or scratch, they’ll be able to repair it - at least temporarily - to seal your room and prevent the damage from getting worse.  They’ll wear heavy-duty gloves before handling any broken glass. Next, they’ll use clear nail polish to patch up any small holes and scratches, building it up in layers, to discretely repair the glass. If there’s a crack but the window still feels sturdy, your repairer may apply a piece of clear tape over the surface to stop the crack from spreading further. For more advanced repairs, you’ll need to hire a glazier or organise a glass replacement.

Window frame repairs

The most common window frame repairs involve repairing rotten wood frames (since aluminium windows are less prone to damage). Your repairer will start by chipping away most of the rotten wood before covering it with a few layers of liquid epoxy to soak in. Once dry, they’ll mix epoxy filler and use this to fill the gap in your wooden window frame, shaping it to blend in with the rest of the frame. Once this filler is dry, they’ll sand the area smooth. At this point, the repairs are ready for priming and painting.

Window replacement

When your glass windows are beyond repair, they’ll need replacing. Your handyman will start by using the broken window pane. They’ll put on heavy-duty gloves and safety glasses before scraping away at the putty or loosening the seal around the broken window pane so they can loosen and remove the old glass (including any shards). They’ll dispose of the old glass and then smooth out the edges of the frame so remove any remaining sealants. Your window replacement technician will measure the window to determine the size of the new glass, leaving a small 3.2mm gap around the edges to allow for expansion. Most of the time, they’ll get the glass cut to size at a local hardware store or glass company. Depending on the type of window frame and how the glass is sealed in, your handyman will then apply putty to the edges of the window, rolling it in their hands to make a long rope, and then sticking it onto the frame. They’ll gently push the new glass into the frame, allowing it to stick to the putty. Your window replacement professional will then apply more putty around the edges on both sides of the glass before gently removing any excess putty and smoothing it over.

Car window repairs

If your car window has a minor hole or crack, your window repair person may be able to fix it without needing a total replacement. They’ll clean the area to remove debris and use a glass repair kit to seal the broken area with epoxy. The epoxy is applied using a syringe which forces resin into any cracks for a stronger seal.

Move my sofa inside with me - up through a raised window

£80

De Beauvoir Town, Greater London, N1

14th Nov 2024

I have 2x boxes for a 2 piece sofa. One is 54kg and one is 40kg. They didn't fit through the door, but they will fit this window. I'm looking for someone with a decent ladder to help me get it in. My plan is to lay the ladder from the window, then tie climbing rope to the box, and one person pulls it sliding up the ladder and the other pushes from the bottom. I have climbing rope and tape etc but not a decent ladder. I reckon it would take me + 1 or 2 people about 15 mins.

This was a difficult task and the guys executed flawlessly with little notice.

Window repair

£100

Unity Place, Greater London

12th Nov 2024

So two things with the window: You can see it shifted left by the first photo and then a small gap on the right hand side at the bottom. Then there is the lock - the handle doesn’t seem to engage the mechanism that controls the locking pins that slide into the metal groves around the frame. So it needs someone who can adjust aluminium frames windows and work on the locking mech.

Fix 2 sash window stops to window frame.

£50

Paddington, Greater London, W2

13th Oct 2024

I have bought 2 bronze barrel-style window stops to replace old ones, which now need screwing into a sash window frame. It should be straightforward. You can see from the photos we had to remove old ones because we lost the key so the new holes will go under the circles you see in the photos. It should involve drilling 2 holes and screwing the barrels into the frame so that the stopper can prevent the window from opening past a certain point. I’ve also included a photo of another window to show you what it will look like when complete. Thanks

Ismael was very prompt and managed the job quickly and efficiently. Very friendly.

Replace plywood window recess cover with GRP. Re-plaster, Paint wall

£300

Hampstead, Greater London, NW3

1st Jun 2024

Main Job Brief - Remove existing plywood boards that have been affixed and plastered over a window recess to cover a blind - Drill new holes to fit blinds one cm back - Install GRP/fibreglass cover (supplied by me) instead - drilling and screwing/bolting into window recess - Plaster over the covers to uniform finish and level with wall - Paint whole wall of bay windows - Paint a second wall Problem: - I previously installed plywood boards inside the front of window recesses which contained roller blinds, the blinds were affixed with a number of steel L brackets. (Photo 1, 2) - The longest section (around 260cm) has warped, cracking the plaster. (Photo 3, 4) - The board now pushes against the blind Solution: - Install a fibreglass/GRP profile instead of the plywood. The profile will be L-shaped so can be screwed into the top of the window recess without using brackets - It must be securely fastened across multiple points, and plastered over with a good plaster/wood filler to prevent cracking - The ends may be fastened with L-shaped brackets to the side wall if required - The profile should be sanded/prepared and painted to a uniform finish along with the rest of the wall - The blind should also be moved back around 1cm, to further minimise the chance it brushes against the GRP cover - There is only 9.5cm of space from the window to the end of the recess so space is tight Second Task - I'd like to run thin cables through the 2 wall corner sections connecting between the bay windows to power/charge the motorised blinds - This should be done without cracking the 2 shorter plywood blind covers that are in fairly good shape - It could be done by carefully running a channel and covering over or perhaps by drilling from both sides of each corner through the brick Third Task A second wall should be repainted in the same colour as the other wall. It's already well painted except for a few very small patches that have been incorrectly touched up with paint

Polite, communicative, timely, real regard for detail. Highly recommended
