Top Epoxy Floor Coating related questions
Epoxy floor coating is a finish made of epoxide resin, polyamine hardener, and other ingredients. It is typically applied over concrete floors to make them smooth, durable, and able to withstand heavy loads. Using epoxy floor coating gives your floors a seamless surface that is easy to clean and is also resistant to water and stains. When not being used as a floor coating, epoxy is used as an adhesive for construction purposes.
Usually, epoxy flooring lasts for 2 to 3 years in an area with heavy traffic (such as an office, restaurant, or factory). Epoxy or resin flooring in low-traffic residential properties may last a bit longer. The easiest way to get the most out of your epoxy floor is to clean and maintain it properly. For tips on how to do this, consult a flooring specialist near you or find cleaning specialists through our platform.
Yes. Due to the nature of its composition, epoxy or resin indoor flooring isn't flexible and can crack when there are shifts in the foundation of your home. These cracks can be unsightly, and can only be repaired with a new layer of epoxy. As this re-coating can get expensive, we recommend requesting epoxy floor installers via our platform. Or, ask a construction expert to recommend more suitable flooring for your needs.
The smell of epoxy floor coating lasts for around 1-3 days. This strong odor is due to the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the product. As VOCs can irritate the eyes, nose, throat, and damage other organs, you'll need to vacate your residence for a few days when you get epoxy floor coating. You may also want to book a nearby babysitter who can watch your kids while you supervise the resin flooring contractors.
Yes, you can. If you'd like to get a new coat of epoxy in your home, your Tasker will first sand down the old coat until it has a matte surface. Then, they'll proceed to re-coat your floors. If you're unsure whether it's already time to get a new coat of epoxy, you can request a Tasker to inspect the current resin flooring. Indicate in your task post that you want a consultation first.
First, epoxy floor coating is great to look at. It covers up defects, comes in several designs and options, and is very shiny and sleek. Next, epoxy is cost-effective since you won't need to do any flooring removal. Another advantage of installing resin flooring at your home or workplace? It’s incredibly durable and able to withstand foot traffic, chemicals, heat, and bulky items like cars or machinery. Epoxy seals and protects your flooring from all this stress!Â

What do epoxy floor coating services include?
When you request an epoxy or resin floor coating via Airtasker, you get a floorer to do the actual coating using the necessary tools and materials for the job. The number of Taskers required may vary depending on whether you're doing resin flooring for a residential or commercial property. Some floorers may also assume that you've already moved any objects out of your room, garage, or driveway. Consider requesting assistance from your floor coating specialist or removal service near you.
While the specifics may vary depending on your Tasker, here's what you can more or less expect from your epoxy floor coating service:
Epoxy floor inspection
Your Tasker may start by testing your floors for moisture and concrete sealer. Next, they'll check if it's a new slab that will need 28 days of curing. Lastly, your specialist will inspect the floor paint. If the floor uses polyurethane or latex paints, they'll strip or soda blast your floor before the actual epoxy coating.Â
Degreasing and preparing the floorÂ
First, your specialist removes oil and grease stains using a degreaser. They'll then rinse the floor and sand off any rubber residue (common in garages or driveways). Any other debris or products will be vacuumed up and washed using a pressure washer. It's essential to keep the floor completely dirt-free since any particles can cause bubbles in the epoxy coating.
Next, your floorer etches the floor using muriatic acid, then neutralizes and removes it. Afterward, they'll rinse the floor and leave it to dry overnight. The following day, your Tasker patches crack with epoxy crack filler and wait for it to dry. Drying time may take up to 6 hours.Â
Applying the epoxy resin floor paint
Next, your epoxy floor contractor preps the coating products. Unless you've specified your choice before the job, they may ask you to choose between solvent and water-based epoxies, as well as the percentage of solids in the product. Â
Solvent-based epoxy comes in various colors but emits extremely hazardous fumes that require a ventilator to use. Meanwhile, water-based epoxy is clear-colored but safer. When it comes to epoxy content, a higher percentage means a harder floor (and a more expensive bill).Â
Final epoxy coat and drying time
Your floorer may then apply the epoxy primer, especially if your floor is porous, flaky, chalky, or rough. This step helps smooth out imperfections and strengthen the floor.
After the primer coat is applied, they proceed to apply two coats of epoxy.Â
Once the first coating is done, your resin floor coating specialist lets it dry for 24 hours. They'll then check and repair any cracks or uneven surfaces and let the filler dry for 12-16 hours. Finally, they'll apply a second coat and a non-skid product, then let it dry for 24 hours.
