Top Retaining Walls related questions
Yes! You can opt to hire a landscape architect to design your retaining wall. Your landscape professional can work with your retaining wall contractor to execute the design. Otherwise, you can post a task for a complete retaining wall service. Some retaining wall contractors may provide everything from design to installation.
When your home’s foundation is downhill, a retaining wall serves as a protective barrier against heavy rainfall or snowmelt, which can erode your home’s foundation. A retaining wall also creates a flat area for a garden. Moreover, a retaining wall is helpful when the only space you have in your backyard is on a slope.
You can maintain your retaining wall by doing regular inspections—especially before, during, and after seasons of heavy snowfall or rainfall. Check the drainage pipes and remove any debris. You should also watch for any unusual bowing or bulging in sections of the wall. Once you see bowing or bulging, call a professional to do a more thorough inspection and fix the defect; These issues can mean a breach is imminent.
Yes, absolutely! A wood retaining wall is ideal for smaller spaces. While wood retaining walls are not as durable as stone or concrete retaining walls, wood can last up to 20 years as long as you have the right design and type of wood. If you plan to have a wood retaining wall made, use heavy-duty wood and stay away from treated pine or repurposed railway sleepers.
The amount of time it takes depends on the size of the retaining wall and the complexity of its design. On average, a wall that’s 4 feet tall and 15 feet long can take three days to build. Any longer or taller will take more time. You can ask your hired Tasker for a better idea of how long the build will take.
You start by building a trench. The rule of thumb when building a retaining wall on a slope is to dig a trench of the appropriate depth for the base blocks. Your wall needs six inches of base material, with an additional depth of one inch per foot of wall height. A two-and-a-half-foot retaining wall will need a trench that’s 8.5 inches deep. This can be hard work, and your best bet is to hire a skilled retaining wall contractor to do the job.

What do retaining walls services include?
Retaining walls services include all the necessary tasks to build a sturdy and attractive retaining wall in your outdoor space to prevent erosion. Your hired retaining wall contractors can assess the site, help you design the retaining wall if you don’t have a design ready, then build the wall.
Assessing the site
The first step in retaining wall construction is taking site measurements. Your Tasker can consider distinct site features, like if the wall will be placed on a slope and if the site gets a lot of rain or snowmelt. The retaining wall builders can also recommend the appropriate design and materials to suit the site’s measurements and features.
Designing the walls
If you don’t have a design already, a local retaining wall contractor can help you make one. Some local landscape retaining wall contractors can provide you with not just any retaining wall design, but one that conforms with established zoning laws and safety and industry standards. The design can also have the aesthetic elements you want and be sturdy enough to prevent soil erosion in your property. Yes, you can have all this while keeping within your budget! When you post a task, specify your budget and get offers from retaining wall contractors near you.
Getting permits
The next step is to get permits for the design and build. Your Tasker can obtain the required permits from the relevant authorities like your Homeowner’s Association, City Planning Department, or other federal jurisdiction. Note that some Taskers may charge extra for getting these permits. Even as construction and zoning laws vary from state to state, don’t worry; Local retaining wall installers know how and where to get the appropriate permits.
Preparing for the build
Your Tasker can get the materials and prepare the appropriate tools. Whichever type of retaining wall you want to be built—brick, concrete, concrete bag, wood, or natural stone—your Tasker can get the right materials! Your Tasker can also make sure the materials and tools are of the right specification, quality, and amount. Then, they can turn over any leftover materials after the build.
Building the retaining walls
Your hired Taskers can do the retaining wall installation or construction once they’re ready with the design, permits, and materials. They can build your retaining wall as per the drafted design, so there are no surprises. The result could be an aesthetically pleasing yet functional wall that can protect your property from soil erosion. The Tasker can execute the design, whether it’s a retaining wall made of wood, concrete, hollow blocks, cement bags, or boulders. They’ll use the appropriate tools, procured materials, safety equipment, and techniques.
Finishing touches
Your Tasker can apply any finishing touches or embellishments on the retaining wall design as required. This can include installing capstones on stone walls, creating gradual step-downs or turning-in sections, backfilling, or installing greenery and other embellishments. Don’t forget that you can also have other features like privacy screens or outdoor blinds installed.

I had a previous brick retaining wall for around my front yard shrub/flower bed that began to shift/crack, etc. I had it removed but I'm ready to have it replaced. HOWEVER, I would like to have some suggestions for alternatives to just replacing the same-old brick retaining wall (similar) to what was already there. That might be what I wind up doing...but if I'm going to replace it...I would like to have some other creative/attractive options. I cannot seem to come up with anything on my own no matter how many "ideas" I google. - Due date: Flexible
