Top Private Doctor related questions

When you book a health and wellness professional through our platform, we highly suggest that you ask them to prove their licence or registration. You can also ask for their IDs at the start of their home visit. This is for your safety and peace of mind, as well as legal reasons.

The answer would depend on the private doctors in your location. While you can certainly try requesting an appointment within minutes of posting on our platform, getting a home visit or even a telemedicine consultation depends on the availability of doctors in your area. When in doubt or if you’re experiencing a medical emergency, it may be better to call your nearest health facility.

It depends on the nature of the physical examination. If any anomalies, physical irregularities, or abuse are suspected, the private doctor may ask the patient for permission to check their genitalia. For example, if a patient complains about heavy menstrual bleeding or irregular periods, the doctor may want to do a pelvic exam. A doctor may also do a breast examination to check for lumps.

Your doctor or their representative may start by asking for your information for the patient chart. Next, the private doctor starts a video call where they ask about medical history, vitals, symptoms, and the results of any recent tests (if applicable). The doctor may ask you to point the camera to the area of concern. Afterwards, the doctor may diagnose, prescribe medication, ask you to take some tests or schedule a follow-up consultation.

Before your private doctor drops by, it would be wise to do the following:

  • Make a list of your concerns.
  • Brush up on your medical history, including your family's medical history.
  • Have any recent lab test results nearby.
  • Gather any medication and supplements that you are currently taking in case your doctor asks about them.
  • Ask a family member or friend to accompany you during the visit, if necessary.

This may depend on the doctor's prerogative and assessment of the patient's maturity and age. The doctor may ask if they would want their parents in the room during the physical exam for patients in their teens. But, the patient can also speak up if they would prefer that their parent leave their room during certain parts of the consultation or physical.

What do a private doctor's services include?

When you book a private doctor consultation through Airtasker, you can get either a home visit from a local private doctor or a telemedicine appointment. If you or a loved one cannot make the trip to a healthcare facility, talking to a private doctor is a good place to start.

Please remember to ask your private doctor for their licence or proof of registration. You can do this before you confirm your appointment and during the start of their visit or telemedicine appointment.

Consultation (home visit)

When you book a consultation with a private doctor through our platform, you may expect them to go to your location. Before they arrive, prepare a comfortable area where you and the doctor can talk and hold a physical examination. If the patient is confined to their bed, you may want to get their room ready for the doctor's visit.

Your private doctor may start by having you fill out a form for your patient chart. Next, they may take your vitals such as your height, weight, temperature, blood pressure, and pulse. A doctor will usually ask questions about your symptoms, medical history, any medication you are currently taking, and any tests you may have undergone. Make sure to answer these questions honestly so that your private doctor can diagnose your condition as accurately as possible.

Treatment and private prescriptions

In some cases, your private doctor may be able to treat you right in your home. Treatment may involve prescribing medication or supplements, advising you or the patient's caregiver on how to monitor symptoms, and so on. The doctor may also recommend a follow-up check-up.

Referral to a healthcare facility or other specialist

If it appears that home care won't be enough for the patient, your private doctor may recommend that the patient be taken to a local hospital or healthcare facility. This is to ensure that the patient's symptoms are monitored round the clock and that professional care is more accessible.

In some cases, your private doctor may refer you to another specialist, such as your local physiotherapist or podiatrist.

Online consultation or telemedicine

Some doctors may also offer online consultations or telemedicine. This is another convenient way to access healthcare without having to make a trip to your local clinic or hospital. Before you begin your online consultation, make sure you have a stable internet connection, as well as a working computer, microphone, and camera. Your private doctor will usually send you instructions for accessing their video call platform.

The consultation itself is similar to a live consultation, where the private doctor asks for your medical history, symptoms, and so on. They may ask you to take your vitals with whatever equipment you have on hand. Then, depending on their assessment of your condition, they may advise you to go to their clinic, schedule a home visit, or take medication. If they refer you to a nearby nutritionist, they may send their instructions via email or chat.Â
