What does a car service include?
As a general rule, your car will likely need to be serviced every 6-12 months, depending on the manufacturer’s recommendations. The exact inclusions of your car service and mobile car service will vary depending on how much work is needed on your car. Some of the popular car services you can book on Airtasker include:
Oil and oil filter change
An oil and oil filter change will help your car run smoothly and increase fuel efficiency. It’s one of the most important parts of a service and should be included in both minor and major services. Your mechanic will find the oil drain plug, loosen and unscrew it, and carefully allow the old oil to drain into a pan. Then they’ll replace and tighten the plug before removing and replacing the filter. Finally, they’ll fill up with fresh oil up to the “full” mark on the dipstick.
Car minor service
A minor service is also known as an interim or basic service. It focuses on changing and topping up fluids and inspecting a number of components for wear and tear. A minor service includes an oil and filter change; an under-body and under-bonnet inspection; a top-up of all key fluids in the engine, including washer fluid, brake fluid, antifreeze, and steering fluid; and a check of up to 35 key components, such as lights, tyres, and brakes. Most mechanics will also check the manufacturer guidelines and recommend any additional work your car may need.
Car major service
A major service includes all the basic services described above, but will also include an inspection of an additional 15-30 car components to ensure that your vehicle is in the best condition possible. These components can include wheel bearings, shock absorbers, and the air conditioning system. Any parts that need extra work or replacement, such as car batteries or windscreens, will be billed as extra.
Model-specific services
If you’re enthusiastic about cars, it might be a good idea to book a mechanic who specialises in your car’s make and model. You can book in a car service with a mechanic who specialises in BMW Servicing, Ford Servicing, Holden Servicing, Honda Servicing, Hyundai Servicing, Mazda Servicing, Mercedes Benz Servicing, Nissan Servicing, Peugeot Servicing, Subaru Servicing, Toyota Servicing, and Volkswagen Servicing. They’ll be familiar with the common issues that are likely to come up and will have specific parts available on-hand in case you need a replacement or repair.

Installation of front spoiler, diffuser, gear paddles etc on BMW M2
$100
Bondi NSW 2026, Australia
25th Feb 2025
Experienced mechanic or person familiar with working on cars required to install the following items on 2020 BMW M2 (F87): • Carbon fibre rear diffuser • Carbon fibre front spoiler • Gear change paddles on steering wheel to be replaced by after market set (involves some disassembly of steering wheel). Instruction videos available on Youtube and other online sourcs. • Dinan installation of Dinan valve controller on the exhaust. This allows for exhaust valves to stay open or closed all the time. Instruction set provided. The owner has another car and regularly requires work of this kind to be performed, so there is an opportunity to secure regular work of this kind in the future.
2022 Toyota RAV4 . Replace Momentary with Latching On Off Switch
$50
Bondi NSW 2026, Australia
23rd Feb 2025
I had an Airtasker auto electrician incorrectly install a momentary on off switch on my 2022 Toyota RAV4. Ideally the spotlights should be connected to the high beam lever on the steering column. Failing that, if you can't connect the spotlights to the high beam lever on the steering column, can you replace the small red momentary on/off switch with a latching on/off switch. The wiring in the high beam lever is apparently only 3 amps so the 12 volts may melt the wiring if not wired correctly. This will enable me to drive with two hands on the steering wheel instead of one hand. If you can't come out to Bondi, I can try to drive to your place if you live in the eastern suburbs or within a short drive of Bondi. Currently the only way I can keep the car spotlights on whilst keeping two hands on the steering wheel instead of one hand on the steering column is with thick rubber bands around the steering column. If you don't have a latching on/off switch and need me to buy one for you from Jaycar Electronics, can you let me know the part number e.g. https://www.jaycar.com.au/red-latching-ip65-pushbutton-switch/p/SP0759.

Need advice - Immobiliser on jeep
$60
Kensington NSW, Australia

Car battery was let go dead from lights being left on all night. Brand new battery installed, car still doesn’t start, we think it is to do with the security system \ immobiliser not allowing the engine to start as there is now a red light showing on dash and we looked up in manual and it says that’s what it is. Model of the car is Jeep Cherokee 2012. Any help/advice much appreciated to get this sorted. Price negotiable depending on level of help received

Car inspection & potential repair - Holden Captiva 7 - Engine problem
$100
Bronte NSW, Australia
8th Jan 2025
2013 Holden Captiva 7 (Auto, petrol). I brought my car to a local mechanic after hearing a weird "clapping" sound coming from the front of the car/engine. He told me the engine is completely wasted (or about to at least), something with the pistons firing/breaking (unsure exactly, my knowledge is limited). He said there's no point in trying to repair or replace the engine for this car. And that I shouldn't drive it anymore as it can break any minute, leave a huge oil spill and even be dangerous with the pistons shooting out (at the passenger). I'm hoping to get a second opinion/inspection on whether this is correct. If repairing or replacing the engine I'm also open to exploring that as I do love the car and it actually only has 120K km. Let me know if you need any additional info. Unsure about what the budget needs to be, and of course, if we move to repair I understand it will be more expansive than just getting an inspection.

Super helpful and detailed, 100% recommend!
