Top Asbestos Removal related questions

Inhaling airborne asbestos fibres and particles have been associated with serious lung disease and cancers. Asbestos materials that are in good condition and are undamaged don’t pose health risks, but damaged or disturbed asbestos can release these harmful particles into the air.

The use of asbestos was widespread in the building industry before 1990. If your home was built before then, you may have asbestos in your roof, walls, cladding, ceilings, floor tiles, eaves, and fences. It’s impossible to identify asbestos without getting a lab test done.

It’s not recommended that you remove asbestos yourself, however, most states allow you to do it if it’s a small area of approximately 10 square metres and you follow strict safety and removal processes. It’s usually best if you can hire a professional to take care of your asbestos removal.

An asbestos removalist is required to be licensed in the state they operate. This license is granted based on industry experience and the completion of formal certification. There are different types of licences for the removal of friable and non-friable (bonded) asbestos.

Small sections of asbestos may be removed in one day, but most jobs will take a few days and even up to a week. This is due to the fastidious preparation, removal, and disposal processes that are adhered to for safety reasons.

For certain types of tasks, you may need to enquire as to what specialist licenses for asbestos removals may be required to undertake your task as this can vary. Please make sure that you confirm that a Tasker has the relevant licence and insurance before accepting an offer.

What does asbestos removal include?

Here’s the kind of help you can expect from asbestos removal services.

Asbestos testing

An asbestos removal expert will take samples from various areas of your home to be sent for testing. Sample areas usually include internal walls and ceilings. The samples will be tested at a NATA (national association of testing authorities) accredited laboratory and you’ll receive a detailed report with the results once testing is complete. One thing they’ll test for is asbestos type. There are two types of asbestos, friable (non-bonded) and non-friable (bonded). Friable asbestos presents a higher level of danger, but non-friable asbestos is safe when it’s not damaged or broken. However, once it’s been compromised, dust particles are released into the air which can cause serious illnesses. Once you’ve got your test results back, you can then make decisions on the next step to take if they confirm asbestos is present.

Asbestos removal

Your asbestos removalists can help remove cladding, gutters, fascias, flooring materials, ceilings, roofs, insulation, fences, and walls. They’ll follow all safety regulations so there are no health risks to your family. They’ll isolate the area and install temporary sheeting to contain any dust. Using PVA and water during removal will stop fibres from becoming loose or airborne. After the removal of asbestos, the panels of asbestos-containing materials will be wrapped in two layers of thick builder’s plastic. Then your asbestos removalist will use a special vacuum with a HEPA filter to clean the affected area and remove any leftover dust or particles to ensure no contaminated materials remain.

Asbestos disposal

After removing the impacted materials, your asbestos removal expert will then dispose of them at a registered waste facility. They’ll use their truck or ute to carry the covered materials and deliver them to designated asbestos disposal drop off points at a local tip or dump.

Emergency removal or repairs

Asbestos is most dangerous when it’s damaged, so if your property is impacted by fire, floods, or storms you may need asbestos removal services before the clean-up process can begin. Your asbestos expert will check the air quality and identify any concerning material. After restricting access to the area, they’ll make a plan to contain and remove the dangerous items. They can also communicate any dangers and concerns about the site to you and the general public.
