Why book a local carpenter through Airtasker?

Carpentry plays a massive part in our lives. From the chairs we sit on to the homes we live in, so much of what we interact with has gone through the hands of a carpenter at one point.

With their extensive work experience, carpenters can help with projects of all sizes. If you’re building an extension or adding a carport to your home, an experienced carpenter can create a frame that’s built to last and meets all council regulations.

On the other hand, if you’re looking at the finer details of your home, a carpenter can be of great assistance too. From small detailing like replacing skirting boards and adding wall partitions, to refurbishing your dining table and chairs, hiring a skilled labourer and having them on your construction site can make all the difference.

With Airtasker, you can quickly and easily find the best carpenter in your area for your job. Simply tell us what you’re looking for, where you’re based, and what your budget is, and we’ll connect you with carpenters nearby your area. You can then browse profiles, read reviews and get in touch with your favourite craftsman to get your project underway!

Carpenters work with wood in all manner of ways. From timber framing for a house or carport to the finishing touches on furniture, carpenters are hired for jobs large and small.

Not all carpenters offer the same services. An experienced cabinet maker may not be the best choice if you want timber framing done, while a decking expert may not have the credentials to refurbish your furniture. It's advisable to choose a Tasker with experience on your specific task.

Yes. While some carpenters have specific areas of expertise, you can employ someone to do a number of small woodworking jobs in one visit. This can be the same job in a number of rooms or different jobs throughout the house. Remember though that some carpentry jobs require more than one day to complete.

Depending on their specialty and level of training, you may find that a carpenter comes under a different name. From specific tasks such as cabinetmaker to more general terms like artisan, joiner or woodworker, there are plenty of variations for carpentry workers.

In the UK,  carpenters will have normally completed Level 2 or 3 in Joinery and Site Carpentry as their college education. They can also take a T Level course in On Site Construction. Carpenters can also gain on-the-job training or an apprenticeship with a training provider.

For certain types of carpentry tasks, you may need to enquire as to what specialist licenses may be required to undertake your task as this can vary. Please make sure that you confirm that a Tasker has the relevant licence and insurance before accepting an offer.

The average price of carpentry services on Airtasker is $250, but depending on the service you need, this can easily range from $120 to $450. Learn more about how much it costs to hire a carpenter to set the right price when hiring a carpenter in your area.

A carpenter primarily focuses on working with wood to construct or repair structures such as furniture, framing, doors, and cabinets. They typically specialize in tasks that require woodworking skills, like installing trim or building custom pieces. A builder, on the other hand, oversees and manages the overall construction of buildings or structures, coordinating different trades (including carpentry, plumbing, and electrical) to ensure a project is completed on time and within budget.

Carpenters need to be careful of several safety risks, such as sharp tools, heavy machinery, and working with materials that can splinter or cause injury. They should also be mindful of their posture and body mechanics to avoid repetitive strain or injury, especially when lifting or carrying heavy materials. Additionally, carpenters should follow proper safety protocols when working in environments with dust, fumes, or potential hazards like electrical wiring to minimize health risks and ensure safe work conditions.

What does a carpenter do?

Whether you’re planning a major renovation on your home, or you simply want to make things look a bit nicer, hiring a carpenter can help you with many different tasks. Carpenters take on a wide range of work, such as fixing areas of houses and building furniture from scratch.

Carpentry work is generally broken down into two types: rough and finish. Rough carpentry refers to work that doesn’t have an intricate look, as it’s covered up – often by bricks, tiles, or plasterwork. Finish carpentry covers the work that will be on display, so needs to have a nicer finish. Furniture, decking, and window frames all fall into this second category.

Decking

Don't know what to do with all that space in your backyard? Hire a carpenter who specialises in building decks. A decking specialist can add an outdoor deck or upgrade an existing one that opens up your outdoor space. This is great if you want to entertain guests or eat outside as a family during the sunny months.

Cabinet making

Cabinetmakers are one example of finish carpentry, because of the high level of detail that goes into their end products. Unlike structural work, it’s important that a cabinet looks nice, so this type of carpenter is a lot more focused on fine details. Cabinetmakers often specialise in other forms of furniture making too.

Refinishing carpentry

While structural carpentry is concerned with jobs on the large end of the scale, trim or refinishing carpentry looks at the small end. A trim carpenter is the way to go if you want someone to fix up your skirting boards, cornicing, or a similar aspect of your home.

Custom made furniture

A house isn’t a home without a few personal touches, and if you’d rather avoid the cookie-cutter Ikea approach to decorating your property, hiring a carpenter to create custom-made furniture can make you stand out. Whether you want chairs, tables, or a shoe rack, there’s someone nearby who can help.

Joinery

Joinery services encompass the craftsmanship of creating and joining wood in workshops, distinct from on-site carpentry. These services range from bespoke projects to crafting timber buildings, emphasizing precision and passion. Joiners play a crucial role in interior woodwork, window and door production, and specialized construction, offering tailored and quality timber solutions.

Cosmetic repair to wooden skirting boards where dog has chewed them

£60

New Balderton, Nottinghamshire

21st Feb 2025

I have white wooden skirting boards and door frames. In places my property vandal of a Sausage dog has, despite being given all the chews and enrichment toys she could ever dream of, chosen to instead eat ancient gloss painted wood. The skirting boards don’t need to be replaced I don’t think as damage is quite localised. I think they could possibly well be repaired with wood filler, sanded and re-painted. I’m unsure really of the price for this for workmanship and materials but open to negotiate against the budget price. Will gladly pay extra if you can convince the tiny four legged criminal to not eat them again.
