We don't believe there is anything behind it and think it was built to keep the wall aligned to a tall box unit covering an unused chimney on the right hand side. If there's nothing behind it, we would like to remove the unit to give us more space and then re-plaster/decorate the entire room. (Top to be mounted one side to a little wall and the rest on IKEA legs) -An extra piece of wood (H90cm, W45cm)is to be added to close one side of the L shape from the floor. -Also, we would need to fix a piece of wall as the paint is coming off on some areas around the door and re-paint the same color. (All the materials and paints are already in the house)
