What does a carpenter do?

Whether you’re planning a major renovation on your home, or you simply want to make things look a bit nicer, hiring a carpenter can help you with many different tasks. Carpenters take on a wide range of work, such as fixing areas of houses and building furniture from scratch.

Carpentry work is generally broken down into two types: rough and finish. Rough carpentry refers to work that doesn’t have an intricate look, as it’s covered up – often by bricks, tiles, or plasterwork. Finish carpentry covers the work that will be on display, so needs to have a nicer finish. Furniture, decking, and window frames all fall into this second category.

Decking

Don't know what to do with all that space in your backyard? Hire a carpenter who specialises in building decks. A decking specialist can add an outdoor deck or upgrade an existing one that opens up your outdoor space. This is great if you want to entertain guests or eat outside as a family during the sunny months.

Cabinet making

Cabinetmakers are one example of finish carpentry, because of the high level of detail that goes into their end products. Unlike structural work, it’s important that a cabinet looks nice, so this type of carpenter is a lot more focused on fine details. Cabinetmakers often specialise in other forms of furniture making too.

Refinishing carpentry

While structural carpentry is concerned with jobs on the large end of the scale, trim or refinishing carpentry looks at the small end. A trim carpenter is the way to go if you want someone to fix up your skirting boards, cornicing, or a similar aspect of your home.

Custom made furniture

A house isn’t a home without a few personal touches, and if you’d rather avoid the cookie-cutter Ikea approach to decorating your property, hiring a carpenter to create custom-made furniture can make you stand out. Whether you want chairs, tables, or a shoe rack, there’s someone nearby who can help.

Joinery

Joinery services encompass the craftsmanship of creating and joining wood in workshops, distinct from on-site carpentry. These services range from bespoke projects to crafting timber buildings, emphasizing precision and passion. Joiners play a crucial role in interior woodwork, window and door production, and specialized construction, offering tailored and quality timber solutions.

Move & Reposition Wooden Shelf in Built-In Wardrobe

£50

Lewisham, Greater London

22nd Mar 2025

Looking for someone to help move a wooden shelf higher in my built-in wardrobe. The shelf is currently supported by a wooden strip base—one side appears to be screwed into the wall, the other possibly glued. What needs to be done: Carefully remove the existing wooden support strip (one side screwed, the other possibly glued). Reposition and reattach the strip higher up. Move the shelf to align with the new position and secure it. Minimal damage to wall and wood preferred. I’ve marked the current setup and intended position with green arrows in the attached image. Should be a quick job for someone with the right tools and experience. Looking for economical offers. Please bring your own tools.

Handyman DIY Help, Wood Cutting, Screwing

£120

Lewisham, Greater London

22nd Nov 2024

Initial task of a recurring series, estimated at 6-8 hours. Looking for someone to help with DIY, crafting, and handyman type mini projects in my flat. The work generally involves building custom shelves and storage compartments, mostly out of wood panels. This includes cutting wood panels, screwing into wood or drywall, mounting fittings and accessories. It also involves all of the planning, measuring, preparation and tidy up around it. Various other handyman type tasks will be involved as well on the longer term. The total scope of work, across all future tasks, is likely to exceed 150 hours. I have a full range of Bosch Professional tools to perform any of the tasks needed. The person should be familiar with using basic manual and power tools. They should have a neat and clean working style with attention to detail. It will help if the person lives close to Lewisham Station to make commute easy.

Knowledgeable on wood tools and techniques. Efficient in progressing the work. Would work with him again.
