Top Handyman related questions

The average cost of handyman services in the UK is £57-£150. Handyman quotes depend on the complexity of the task, the time required, any specialist tools, and whether the handyman is near you or has to travel to reach the job.

Posting a job on Airtasker is the best way to find a handyman near you. Our transparent review system helps you book a local handyman with the right tools and experience to complete your task to a high standard.

A handyman may have one or two specialist skills - like bricklaying or plumbing - or they might offer general labour or general maintenance services to complete odd jobs. So clearly explain the task you need done and you’ll get quotes from tradesmen with the right skills for your task.

You might book a handyman to help with jobs like picture hanging, furniture assembly, plumbing repair, bricklaying, property maintenance, or even painting and decorating. By booking a handyman near you, they’ll be able to quickly and easily get to your property and complete your task.

Handymen tend to be skilled workmen that can help with a range of home services. A contractor, on the other hand, is someone who’s licenced and skilled in one particular profession, like a plumber or electrician.

With electrical work, general handyman services can extend to replacing light bulbs and, in some cases, helping with electric fan repair. Jobs like installing switches or rewiring should be left to licensed electricians.

Handyman Services

What do handyman services include?

Handymen can tackle a wide range of indoor and outdoor home DIY tasks. Here are some tasks you might ask a local handyman near you to pop round and help with:

General handyman services

Got a list as long as your arm of odd jobs that need a handyman to complete? Hire general labour handymen to get several things done at once. They can help with pulling up carpet, hanging doors, fixing broken appliances, garden work, and more.

Indoor installations and repairs

A local handyman can help install newly bought homewares or fix broken possessions (so you can hopefully save some money). For example, they can help with DIY blind installation and repairs, fitting and repairing the kitchen sink, fitting pet doors, hanging shower screens, and even wallpapering. They’ll get it done using their own specialist tools and will let you know if you need to provide or pay for any additional materials.

Outdoor installations and repairs

Your outdoor area and belongings have to deal with a lot. So help them withstand whatever nature (or your family) throws at them for longer by getting them professionally installed or repaired. Find a handyman who can help with garden shed installation, BBQ repair, fitting outdoor blinds, window repairs, fixing your mower, putting up your clothesline, and even repairing your kids’ trampoline.

Bricklaying and building work

You can hire a handyman near you with bricklaying and building experience to help build garden walls, repair loose brickwork, install MDF, or even construct a chicken coop. When getting quotes from tradesmen, mention if you’ve got the building materials already, or if you’d like them to supply the materials as part of the job.

Wall hanging

From pictures and TVs to bike racks and mirrors - if you need help with wall mounting, get a DIY handyman to fit your furnishings securely and make sure they’re level. Most handymen will bring their own tools, but you may need to supply extra materials such as screws, picture wire, or mounts for heavier electrical items like TVs and driers.

Furniture repair

When booking a handyman for flat pack furniture assembly or furniture repair, you’ll need to be specific about the furniture that needs fixing. For example, handymen with carpentry experience may be better if it’s your wooden coffee table, wardrobe, or sofa bed that needs repairing. Meanwhile, a handyman with electrical experience may be right for any ceiling fan or digital fitness equipment fixes. That’ll ensure you get the best handyman near you for the job, plus the right tools to get it done.

Fix clothing rails in closet

£200

West Hampstead, Greater London, NW6

15th May 2024

I’ve installed (poorly) clothing rails into a walk in closet and they have come out of the wall due to the weight of the clothes. I’d like to reattach them and reenforce them somehow, so they can be used to hang heavy clothes. There are four rails currently installed in the wall, but one has come completely out of the wall, one is starting to come out of the wall and the two others are stable (for now). Job would also be patching up addition holes from reattaching in the wall, if the original holes can’t be used.

Howard was fantastic! Great communication, showed up exactly on time with a variety of tools. He was really thoughtful about how to tackle the problem and did a wonderful job fixing my railings. Cleaned up afterwards and I’m going to have him come to by fix another project. Highly recommended!

Really nice guy, good energy

Drill through wall, install brush plates

£75

Poplar, Greater London

7th May 2024

Reposting as unfortunately last tasker wasn’t able to complete the job due to parking. Please note there is no parking at my property - there is limited pay and display close by but this job would ideally suit somebody not driving. I would like a brush plate installed on a wall next to my sockets (see image). I would like a second brush plate installed on the other side of the wall which is inside my kitchen cupboard (see image). I then want an extension cable passed through (and a hdmi) so I have a power source inside the kitchen cupboard. The brush plates aren’t big enough to push the extension sockets through so you’ll need to disconnect the plug to get it through. You will need a drill, stud finder (metal and wood as I have metal and wood studs) and something to check for wiring in the wall. I already have the brush plates and cables. Please see images attached for an idea of the task.

Ade was amazing. Very professional and meticulous - made sure the job was done perfectly. Very nice guy will use again!
