Top Plasterer related questions

While there is no mandatory plastering licence, those looking to work on larger construction projects are highly recommended to hire a plasterer registered with a competent person scheme like the British Gypsum Association. This ensures they meet industry standards and have proper insurance.

Plastering can cost between £150 to £200 per square metre on average, but this range can vary depending on your location, the type of plaster you require and the area of the house to work on among other factors. For a more precise estimate, request a detailed quote from your Tasker.

It could take one to three days, depending on the number of areas that you need to have plastered. For a more precise estimate, consult your Tasker.

Plaster usually dries after two to three days on the first application, then another seven days for the final coat.

Yes, lime plaster is an excellent choice to consider. It’s an environmentally friendly material that helps to regulate humidity and reduce the risk of mould, making it ideal for homes in Australia’s varied climates. And of course, it works well with both contemporary and traditional designs, which is a great plus.

Gypsum plaster is a widely used material for interior wall and ceiling finishes. Other common choices are cement plaster and clay plaster. A more modern and affordable option is synthetic plaster made of plastic. Each type of plaster has its own unique properties, so it's best to consult your Tasker for the best material for your purpose.

What do plasterer services include?

Booking a plastering service on Airtasker allows you to work with experts who have the right skill set and proven portfolio to enhance the aesthetic appeal, longevity, and durability of your walls or ceilings. If you plan to prime these surfaces for remodelling or decorate your living space, plastering is a step you mustn’t miss.

Here are other plastering services you can get via Airtasker:

Ceiling plastering

For a successful ceiling plastering, enlist the help of skilled tradespeople. Applying plaster to the ceiling demands a high level of precision due to the physically tiresome overhead work. Plasterers usually start by cleaning the ceiling surface and preparing the surrounding area. While some Taskers can move or cover furniture, you may need a separate service to clear the room. Afterwards, a base coat of plaster is applied, followed by a finishing coat after the base has set. Special care is taken to ensure an even surface without sagging or dripping.

Wall plastering

To achieve a smooth interior wall surface, ideal for wallpapering or repainting, hire a Tasker to apply plaster on your walls. This service is similar to ceiling plastering, though plasterers have easier access and navigation around the area due to the vertical orientation. They remove any dust or debris from the area and proceed to apply two coats of plaster for complete and even coverage. If necessary, plasterers can apply a bonding agent before plastering. Wall plastering can also involve drywall plastering or applying plasterboard for added protection against noise and humidity.

Plaster repair

Before beginning a plaster repair job, experts often advise hiring other specialists to address any underlying issues near or around the plaster. Once problems like leaks or damaged pipes are resolved, plasterers inspect the site themselves to evaluate the extent of the damage. Afterwards, they prepare the appropriate amount and type of plaster needed, matching its texture and appearance with the plaster already installed. To restore the plaster to its original condition, consider hiring a painter to apply a fresh coat of paint after the repairs.

Plaster coving

Plastic coving is a practical service if you desire some quick, elegant enhancement to an otherwise dull room or require assistance hiding noticeable imperfections. The process involves plasterers installing decorative moulding on the junction between the walls and ceilings. Plaster is ideal for coving given its flexibility even in awkward angles and areas, but there are plastic selections to consider if you prefer an affordable alternative. During a coving service, plasterers measure and cut the coving to fit and install it with adhesives.

Lime plastering

If you manage an eco-friendly household, lime plastering is an excellent choice. A traditional technique that uses a mixture of lime, sand and water, lime plastering creates a breathable wall finish and a durable surface that can withstand centuries. Lime plaster is also known for its natural antiseptic properties and ability to regulate humidity, making it ideal for spaces prone to dampness and for preserving older structures.

Plasterer to repair one wall in bathroom

£200

Alameda Place, Greater London

12th Nov 2024

I live in a flat in Mile End, east London. It was a new build when I bought it 8 years ago. I have removed some skirting boards in my bathroom where damp got through the sealant with the aim of replacing them. When I removed them I could see that some of the walls behind them had a level of deterioration due to the damp. In a few parts there is also a small gap between where the wall finishes and the floor title starts, although this isn’t the case on the far left wall that touches the window frame Also at the corner wall (far right) when I removed the tile the metal corner protecter was damaged and coming away. I am looking for the wall to be repaired before I apply new skirting boards. After I have fit skirting boards I have someone set to come round to apply sealant to this area and the rest of the house. I have attached pictures to show the wall and I’m guessing that the work that will need to be done before I can apply skirting boards would be: -The metal corner protect will need to be pulled out and replaced? I can’t say for sure how high this goes but I think it is only mid height of the room, it is also fine and not exposed / damaged from where you can see at the top of the picture onwards. -Replaster the corner and the lower area from just above where the skirting board started through to the floor level. Would be great to get your thoughts and / or if you think anything else needs doing. Also I have someone ready to cut and apply the skirting boards but if this is a service you could also do as part of the same job do let me know? No worries if not though as it’s mainly the wall condition I am trying to sort. I am looking to get this work done as soon as possible within the next week or so Thanks, Olly

Plastering and painting of ceiling

£75

Pentonville, Greater London

17th Oct 2024

I am looking to repair and repaint a section of my living room ceiling that has water damage. The water damage has left visible stains, and I need someone to assess the affected area to ensure there is no further underlying damage (e.g., mold, dampness) and confirm that the source of the water damage has been addressed. Clean and treat the water-stained area to ensure it is ready for painting. Apply any necessary primer or stain-blocking treatment to prevent the stain from showing through the new paint. Repaint the affected ceiling area to match the existing paint colour. If needed, I can provide the paint.

Tyrone is very good at what he does. I certainly will be using his services again.

Painting house interiors (+ some re-plastering)

£1,500

Leytonstone, Greater London, E11

8th Oct 2024

Hello (reposting this task as I now have a starting date), we recently replaced our carpet with wooden flooring and we had to replace the skirt-boards too. The house (hallways + stairs + landing + living room + bedroom + office and their ceilings) now needs to be repainted (and some areas of the walls need fixing the missing plaster/ drywall). The walls won’t need a primer but just 2 coats of paint. The furniture needs to be moved (in the center of the rooms or from one room to another). The skirting boards + stairs/handrails and some of the doors (3-4) needs to be painted too. The rooms are this size: - hallways + stairs + landing: 16 sq mt - living room: 21 sq mt - bedroom: 11 sq mt - office: 7 sq mt Thank you

Matthew did a wonderful job in our flat. He has a great eye for detail, ensuring every aspect of the job was completed to a high standard. His communication was excellent throughout the project. He worked efficiently without cutting corners, and his honest, professional approach was much appreciated. Highly recommend Matthew for anyone looking for quality workmanship and reliability.

Replace plywood window recess cover with GRP. Re-plaster, Paint wall

£300

Hampstead, Greater London, NW3

1st Jun 2024

Main Job Brief - Remove existing plywood boards that have been affixed and plastered over a window recess to cover a blind - Drill new holes to fit blinds one cm back - Install GRP/fibreglass cover (supplied by me) instead - drilling and screwing/bolting into window recess - Plaster over the covers to uniform finish and level with wall - Paint whole wall of bay windows - Paint a second wall Problem: - I previously installed plywood boards inside the front of window recesses which contained roller blinds, the blinds were affixed with a number of steel L brackets. (Photo 1, 2) - The longest section (around 260cm) has warped, cracking the plaster. (Photo 3, 4) - The board now pushes against the blind Solution: - Install a fibreglass/GRP profile instead of the plywood. The profile will be L-shaped so can be screwed into the top of the window recess without using brackets - It must be securely fastened across multiple points, and plastered over with a good plaster/wood filler to prevent cracking - The ends may be fastened with L-shaped brackets to the side wall if required - The profile should be sanded/prepared and painted to a uniform finish along with the rest of the wall - The blind should also be moved back around 1cm, to further minimise the chance it brushes against the GRP cover - There is only 9.5cm of space from the window to the end of the recess so space is tight Second Task - I'd like to run thin cables through the 2 wall corner sections connecting between the bay windows to power/charge the motorised blinds - This should be done without cracking the 2 shorter plywood blind covers that are in fairly good shape - It could be done by carefully running a channel and covering over or perhaps by drilling from both sides of each corner through the brick Third Task A second wall should be repainted in the same colour as the other wall. It's already well painted except for a few very small patches that have been incorrectly touched up with paint

Polite, communicative, timely, real regard for detail. Highly recommended
